Samaritans open clothing bank in bid for funds

MAIDSTONE andWeald Samaritans, based at 48 Gre- cian Street, Maidstone, has opened a clothing bin at the Sittingbourne Road Park and Ride site, its third in town, to help raise much-needed funds. The charity receivesmoney fromSittingbourne-based clothes recycler LW Sait for all used clothes that are dropped there. Will Merrifield, Samaritans branchdirector, said: “We

are a local charity affiliated to the Samaritans network nationwide, butwe have to raise our ownfunds to keep going. “We are hoping that these distinctive bins, whichwe

also have at our branch in Grecian Street and at Westree Court, will add to our fundraising efforts. By using the bins,we can ensure that donors can be safe in theknowledge that theirdonations go where they in- tended.

Solar arrays idea A SCHEME has been unveiled to install two 4kWh arrays of solar photovoltaic panels at Br- ishing Court Farm, Brishing Lane, Boughton Monchelsea. Should Maidstone Council

grant planning permission, the arrays would be connected to themain house, Brishing Court, a 600-year-old timber-framed hall house, and the ragstone stables. The planning statement said:

“The main property is heated via an oil-fired boiler. The intention is to upgrade the property by the installation of a wood fired burner and capture and use solar energy for water heating and stored thermal energy.”

“Weare grateful for the help from MaidstoneCouncil

and from our partners in this, LWSait and Sons, in ar- ranging the bins and the sites. We hope to add to our sites as suitable ones arise but if you are thinking of getting rid of clothing, fabrics or shoes you no longer need, please think of us.”

Charity polytunnel plan

to extend growing time DANDELION Time has applied for permission to construct a walk-in polytunnel on agricultural lane behind Elmscroft House, Charlton Lane, West Farleigh. The charity works with children and families

with behavioural and emotional needs. A sup- porting statement said: “Some of the work in- cludes the growing of vegetables, soft fruits and herbs for resale to the public and for use on the project. “The polytunnel is designed to extend the growing season and increase production of these crops. The hedges screening the site of the poly- tunnel from Charlton Lane will be built up using indigenous species. Over 100 young trees have al- ready been planted on adjacent fields.” Maidstone Council will decide on the planning application.

Everymonth the Maidstone and Weald Samaritans answer 9,000 calls, emails, texts or visits from people in distress. There is always somebody on

duty, 24 hours a day. The charity does not claim to

be able to solve people’s prob- lems but provides a safe oppor- tunity to talk things through in total confidence. If youarehaving problemsand

want to talk, call Samaritans on 01622674444,or084579090 90, email jo@samaritans. org.uk, text 07725 90 90 90 or comein to GrecianStreet, where somebodywillbehappy totalk to youfacetoface.

Scout HQ homes plan rejected A PROPOSAL to replace the former Headcorn Scout headquarters in Ulcombe Road with a ter- raced development of three two-bedroom homes has been refused. Maidstone Council felt William Day’s scheme

had an “unsympathetic design” that “would result in a cramped development”.
