Western Marylanders Want More Bridle Trails

According to the herald-mail.com, the Mary- land equestrians near Cumberland are agitat- ing for more trails in Washington County, and

recently made their wishes known during a Washington County public hearing for land preservation, parks and recreation. Currently, the primary riding area is along the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park. T e county is required to update its park plan

every six years in order to be in compliance with requirements for funding from Maryland Program Open Space and to comply with a federal land and water conservation law. T e

protection laws. T e court-ordered oversight of Parkinson will help ensure that horses will not suff er in violation of the plea agreement or the law. In the meantime, everyone involved in the care of the horses is comforted that a ma- jority of them will be surrendered to the County and we will be able to begin placing them in new, happy homes. T e outpouring of support from the Maryland horse community for these animals has been tremendous and we are so grateful to all the farms, veteri- narians, farriers, dentists, and feed suppliers who contributed their resources, time, and expertise to help these animals. Neither the prosecution nor the defense apparently were willing to risk

a trial. Richardson noted that even if the State were to have prevailed in court this week, Parkison surely would have appealed and the case could have been tied up for years. As a result, the horses legal ownership status would have continued in limbo for possibly years, making it impossible to re-home or adopt the horses until the case was fi nally settled, possibly years from now. Richardson believes that it is in the best interest of the

current update would replace a version adopted in 2005. horses to achieve a settlement sooner rather than later, and is satisfi ed that Parkison pled “no contest” to some of the charges. For Parkinson, her post-court statement indicated that she too wished

to avoid a protracted legal battle: “Without an agreement…the case could have spent years in the system before it was resolved. Ms. Parkinson understood it was best to not continue the court battle.” Our readers have more questions than this article can answer. T e

original posting of this article on equiery.com has already generated over 20 comments, many which are long, detailed and well thought out. (Comments using infl ammatory or inappropriate language have been removed.) T is case is troubling to T e Equiery on many levels – and not surpris-

ingly, it is diffi cult to get a accurate picture. Nonetheless, we will con- tinue to attempt to learn more and understand more clearly, and as we do, we will post our fi ndings on equiery.com and in future print editions.
