Babies!

Assateague Island National Seashore’s herd of about 115 wild horses just increased by two this spring, due to the birth of a pinto fi lly and a bay foal (no one is quite sure yet whether it is a colt or fi lly). Very few mares foal out anymore, as a contra- ception program is in place in order to keep the herd stabilized and to keep the ecosystem and foraging resources on the island in balance. T e pinto fi lly was born March 9 to the nine-

year-old mare April Star, who will now receive a contraception dart each year. 17-year-old Queen Latifah, mother of the

bay foal, had received the contraceptive dart for ten years, but had not received it the last two years. T e herd’s two newest members will be named this fall in the Assateague Island Alliance’s an- nual naming auction on eBay. After that, they will be placed in the Foster Horse Program, which gives visitors a chance to support a wild pony for an annual donation. T ey get a photo
