I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do. ~Helen Keller

NaturallyLA.com SUBSCRIPTIONS Be well,
As we have been pulling together this month’s Green Living issue, I began to reflect upon the personal journey I have been on relative to living a healthier, more sustainable life. As I have matured, I have become more and more aware of the choices I make and how these choices impact my health and that of the planet. Because my father died at age 40 of a heart attack, keeping physically fit has been a priority for decades; however, I confess that my diet left much to be desired when I was younger. In my 20s I ate fast food on a regular basis. In my 30s I cut out the vast majority of fast foods but continued a diet of highly processed foods. Today I focus on eating fresh foods and locally grown when possible. Although I still eat some animal protein, I have greatly reduced the amount of red meat I consume.
Ten years ago, I accepted a position in Des Moines, Iowa. I took advantage of a favorable housing market and purchased a home—complete with four bedrooms and a three-car garage situated on a 1/3 acre lot. Full disclosure requires I admit to being single with no children. I rationalized this would be a great investment—and it was. If I were faced with the same decision today, I would opt for a home more commensurate with my needs and invest some of the purchase price elsewhere. Eight years ago I purchased a new car. It is a quality, mid-sized sedan, but by no means extravagant. I recently stepped out of my car and a gentleman approached to tell me he was interested in the same model and wanted to know what my experience had been. I told him it has been a great car for me and other than routine maintenance, there have been no problems. “However,” I added, “my next car will get over 35 mpg.” He responded that he didn’t think one person could make a difference so he figured, why bother?
I had just recently read the Helen Keller quote at the top of this letter. It is because of this quote I chose to relay the above story and details of my journey. We are all human, with human frailties and faults. We are not perfect, but we can strive to become more lucid and conscious beings as we traverse this journey. In large part, I launched this magazine to propel my own personal growth. And it is our continued goal to inform and inspire our readers to live healthier, more balanced lives.
On a separate note, we are happy to announce that we have expanded
Natural Awakenings Los Angeles from 32 to 36 pages. Growth in our advertiser base coupled with an increase in quality, local content necessitated the move. As the year continues, we anticipate a further expansion to 40 pages and possibly 48. Stay tuned. In the next month or two, we will have more exciting developments to unveil.
