Collaboration and UC VoIP technology offers the advantage of massive extra potential for collaboration, to break down the borders within and between businesses. For example, the Microsoft acquisition of Skype offers intriguing possibilities for integration with Microsoft’s existing Lync product, to allow enterprises to communicate flexibly with their customers and partners. However, any announcements will have to wait until the acquisition is finally approved by regulators. Whether on-premise or in the cloud,
organisations expect VoIP to operate as part of a Unified Communications solution. End-user productivity can
benefit from integration of voice, email, corporate instant messaging and video conferencing. MS Lync is the most popular Unified Communications platform, and it is important to ensure that any VoIP solution can integrate with it. For SMEs, MS Lync can even act as the VoIP server, but I wouldn’t recommend it for larger implementations. The new generation of tablets and

smartphones offers a wealth of UC possibilities, and it is often C-level executives who are driving their adoption. The best VoIP solutions include clients for iPhone, Android and Blackberry, which extend the corporate telephony solution onto the mobile
device. This means that end-users can enjoy the rich features of the corporate telephony system while on the road or at home. Despite these advantages, for many
IT departments VoIP remains the elephant in the room, even though the IT team already has many of the required skill sets through managing data networks effectively. With vendors no longer investing in PBX systems, my best advice would be to take a proactive stance and plan for the change before you are forced to make it by market forces. Talk to your trusted partners and identify the best route to VoIP for your organisation.
