First Class Skills & Support
Cheshire and Warrington provides companies with access to a skilled workforce of 560,000 people within 30 minutes’ drive.
The proportion of residents in the sub-region with skills of NVQ Level 4 and above far exceeds the North West average, while employment, economic activity and productivity levels are all significantly higher than the regional and national figures.
There are four university campuses in the area, part of one of the largest concentrations of universities in Europe.
The Manchester Metropolitan University Cheshire campuses are in Crewe and Alsager while the University of Chester has bases in both Chester and Warrington. The University of Chester also provides specialist business accommodation, advice and support via its Riverside Innovation Centre complex. The sub-region also benefits from being close to the world-class universities of Liverpool and Manchester, which are centres of research excellence in more than 20 subjects. Other nearby universities include Keele and Glyndwr in Wrexham.
50,000 students a year graduate from universities across the North West as a whole, including 31,000 science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) graduates.
Cheshire and Warrington is also well served by seven further education colleges; these facilities and other training providers offer a range of bespoke programmes linked to strengths in the local economy, including the logistics centre at Warrington Collegiate and the Cheshire Oaks Retail Academy.
In terms of wider business support, economic development teams are based in all three local authorities in the area, providing customised proposals in response to all types of investor enquiries.
The new Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership is responsible for determining local economic priorities, and undertaking activities to drive economic growth.
