Tackling the ‘silent killer’

BAN has declared war on what local
health professionals have dubbed ‘the silent killer’. Inactivity is the cause of many chronic medical conditions but a new community health initiative, Healthy Options, is looking to tackle the issue by encouraging people to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Healthy Options is for people who have a chronic medical condition, or at risk of de- veloping such a condition,

whose condition can be im- proved or managed. Clients will be referred to Healthy Options from the Lorn Medical Centre, with some additional input from Connel, Port Appin and Eas- dale surgeries.
After an initial meeting with the Healthy Options Project Manager, Andrea James, a 12-week activity programme, based on the client’s inter- ests, will be drawn up. This programme could include
organised physical activity, such as Oban Health Walks; a home-based programme; or time in the gym, swimming or exercise classes at Atlantis Leisure.
Healthy Options also includes an education programme of- fering sessions on health and ‘exercising safely’ and ‘un- derstanding food labels’. A follow-on programme will be supported and monitored by Healthy Options for a fur-
