Investing in the latest kit ensures Te Gym competes with the best

alone a private health club. Tis means we attract members from right across the social spectrum – from well-off professionals to students and the unemployed. We currently have more than 100,000 members and 35 per cent have never been to a health club before. Also, because Bridges is a social investing firm, 50 per cent of our sites have to be in city regeneration areas. At present, 80 per cent of our sites meet the requirement, so we’re sig- nificantly out-achieving that target.

What positions are you currently recruiting for? We’re expanding quickly, so we’ve currently got lots of opportunities for the appoint- ment of high-calibre general managers and assistant general managers. We’re also on the lookout for regional managers, who will be responsible for overseeing the financial oper- ation, marketing and development of around 10 new health club sites as they open.

What do these roles involve? We have a philosophy of allowing our manag- ers to manage. Instead of having a huge central operation, we prefer to empower our man- agement staff to make decisions and, within certain guidelines, to treat the facility as they would their own business. Each of our gen- eral managers is responsible for a turnover in excess of £1m a year, and people who like

being told what to do every minute of the day will struggle with our culture. But those who are willing to step up and show initiative will be both recognised and rewarded.

What experience or qualities are you looking for? A background in the fitness sector is an advantage, but it’s not essential if the candi- date is willing to do the necessary training: one of our best regional managers came from outside the sector and has achieved a REPs- accredited Level Tree qualification while with us. Te other thing we look for is an out- going personality. We want managers who enjoy dealing with people. If you’d rather be in the office all day producing reports, this isn’t the job for you.

What incentives do you offer? In addition to their base salaries, which are very competitive, our managers can earn up to 20 per cent of their income via a perfor- mance-based bonus. And we don’t make it

impossible to achieve those bonuses – we work with our managers to decide on real- istic targets for each business, and the vast majority meet them. Te rate at which we’re expanding also means we can offer a clearly defined career path to motivated individuals, from assistant manager to general manager to regional manager.

Are there any other benefits to working for The Gym Group? It’s an incredibly buoyant environment to work in. We won Budget Gym of the Year at the 2011 National Fitness Awards, which everyone was hugely pleased about, and in the last 18 months we’ve only lost one mem- ber out of our entire team. In an industry bedevilled with high staff attrition, I really think that speaks for itself and we welcome applications via the address below.
