The Power List 2012 Let’s celebrate success

Kate Kinninmont Chief executive, Women in Film and Television

We at WFTV are very aware that women are still too few in important media jobs, worse paid in many roles and too easily pushed out of the industry as they age. But we also see the fantastic progress that women are making and we are keen to

celebrate it. There are 50 extraordinary women on this Power List. Every one of them has earned her place through talent, hard work, perseverance and sheer dogged ability. We salute them all. Lists are always contentious and the team at Broadcast, Screen and WFTV have had

many lively debates – and not a little arm-wrestling – as candidates for inclusion were discussed. We’re well aware that a different team could come up with a substantially different list and we’re all agreed that we don’t have enough black or ethnic minority names on our list. Perhaps I’m inviting a deluge, but I’d be pleased to see your list – and your arguments for the inclusion of women we’ve missed out this year. One thing I do know: the women included here are all exceptional achievers. They

help keep the UK at the forefront of the creative industries worldwide and are an inspiration to us all.

Emily Booth Group special projects editor, Emap Media

On International Women’s Day, we’re proud to highlight the inspirational women who are helping to shape the future of the fi lm and television industries. If you’re a woman working in fi lm and TV today, you’re still likely to be paid less than

a man doing the same job, and fi nd it harder to stay in the business once you become a parent – or have the audacity to get older. It’s shocking that in 2012, female contributors on TV are still so outnumbered by

male voices. Broadcast’s Expert Women campaign is trying to address this and it is encouraging that our goals are shared and supported by several broadcasters. The creative industries have huge power to shift and infl uence opinion, yet much

of the content we see and hear reinforces stereotypes rather than challenging them. That’s why we’re happy to celebrate the achievement of the talented and outstanding

women in these pages – those working in executive positions, behind the camera and in front of it – who not only have thriving careers but have had a particularly strong year at the cutting edge of the business.
