Carey Mulligan Actress
The hottest directors in Hollywood are beating on this prolifi c actress’s door, secure in the knowledge that Carey Mulligan (above) can carry a movie. With her recent fi lms Shame (directed by Steve McQueen) and Drive (Nicolas Winding Refn) winning rave reviews, this in- demand actress has rarely been off our screens and there’s a whole lot more of her to come. In December, cinemagoers will be able to see her play Daisy Buchanan in the fi lm adaptation of The Great Gatsby directed by Baz Luhrmann, and she’s also bagged the lead in new Coen Brothers’ project Inside Llewyn Davis. Mulligan – whose lead performance in her big screen debut An Education won her an Oscar nomination – is also attached to Spike Jonze’s next fi lm, as well as a lead role in the forthcoming adaptation of Ian McEwan’s On Chesil Beach.
Sue Perkins Presenter
From perfecting the art of conduct- ing an orchestra to swallowing her vegetarian pride to wallow in the feasts of yesteryear, Sue Perkins is nothing if not game. She’s charmed her way into the nation’s hearts through a winning mix of exuber- ance, caustic wit and intelligence, and has become one of the key faces in BBC2 popular factual. She is natural with the public, as she proved in last year’s breakaway hit The Great British Bake Off, and is always keen, as she puts it, to sneak “an element of educational value” into shows with a light touch. Last year, she received the BBC News and Factual prize at the annual Women in Film and Television Awards and has recently covered subjects as diverse as Charles Dickens’ relation- ships and relearning the piano.
Maggie Smith Actress
As one of the most famous faces in British acting, on both screen and stage, Dame Maggie Smith (above) needs no introduction. However, what sets her apart from many other British actresses is the fact that she continues to shine in lead roles at the age of 77, garnering awards both home and abroad. Her role as Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, in ITV’s Downton Abbey won her an Emmy, to add to her bulging trophy cabinet alongside Baftas, Academy Awards and Golden Globes. One of her most famous performances, which boosted her profi le worldwide, was as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter movies, and she can currently be seen in the box-offi ce hit The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. With a CV spanning genres from comedy to period drama to the classics, Smith’s versatility is surely one of the reasons for her longevity in the business.
Tilda Swinton Actress
After spending recent years in big-budget fi lms such as The Chronicles Of Narnia and The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Tilda Swinton turned in one of the best performances of the year in the low-budget We Need To Talk About Kevin. Lynne Ramsay’s adaptation of Lionel Shriver’s novel featured Swinton as the mother of a troubled child. Barely off camera for the entire fi lm, she portrayed a women who was attempting to go unnoticed in a community wounded by her son – not easy for someone both statuesque and striking. It has earned her an

armful of awards and more than a dozen other nominations. Swinton will next be seen in Moonrise Kingdom, a drama set in the 60s from director Wes Anderson.
Kirsty Wark Journalist and presenter
Kirsty Wark (below) is best known for presenting current affairs show Newsnight and its weekly arts
spin-off The Review Show (formerly Newsnight Review). However, the past 12 months has been pivotal for her in terms of broadening her appeal with the public and breaking new ground, even into comedy. She appeared on MasterChef as a
contestant, losing in the fi nal to Phil Vickery, and secured a cameo appearance in the Absolutely Fabulous new year special,
playing herself. In September, BBC2 gave her the go-ahead to

show, which kicked off in January. Wark also merits inclusion in this list on the back of her vocal criticism of the BBC, and even her own show Newsnight, for its lack of female on-screen talent.
Kate Winslet Actress
Kate Winslet will be seen in 3D this year in the re-release of Titanic, the box-offi ce juggernaut that made her a global superstar. In the past year, the Reading-born superstar has taken the leading role in HBO mini-series Mildred Pierce, which earned her a Golden Globe and Emmy, while also appearing in Roman Polanski’s Carnage and apocalyptic thriller Contagion. Just 36 years old, Winslet’s career – which spans challenging roles in fi lms such as Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Iris and The Reader – continues to offer something different with each project. Her next is Movie 43, which comprises a series of comedy shorts, and period drama The Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Pie Society, directed by Kenneth Branagh.
