EDMED STOVES - COAL - CHIMNEY SWEEPING 10 East
THE Mayor of Maidstone, Cllr Brian Mortimer, took time out from his busy schedule to visit Beryl Parker, one of Shepway’s longest-serving residents. Beryl moved into her flat in Durham Close, in 1950, and still lives there today, 62 years on. Over a cup of tea with the mayor andmayoress, Beryl (87) talked about her marriage in 1945 in the Norfolk village of Trunch, where she grew up. She met her late husband Sid-
ney when her parents, who ran the village pub, invited soldiers stationed nearby to Sunday tea. They were married for 51 years, until his death in 1996.
On leaving the Land Army,
Beryl and Sid, who had been with the Army intelligence group the Phantoms, settled in Maidstone, where Sid worked as a carpenter for Clarke & Epps. Beryl told the mayor about
the community spirit in the close, where most of the resi- dents had young families. Her sons, Roger and Derek, who still live locally and are now re- tired, regularly visit their mum, along with her three grandchil- dren and her great-grandson William, aged seven months. Roger said: “My mother must
be one of the original residents still alive.”
Trade discounts at county show LOCAL businesses are being offered a cash incentive to sign up for this year’s Kent County Show. For the first time, Kent businesses are being offered a 5 per cent
early booking discount on trade stands for the show, which takes place at Detling showground on July 13, 14, and 15. The show is set to attract more than 80,000 visitors, and Roger Moore, Kent Showground’s executive manager, said: “The early booking discount is to encourage many more Kent businesses to showcase the great variety of products and services available in the county.” The show is now in its 83rd year and includes a vast array of
trade stands, a food hall with local produce, an EcoVillage, equine and livestock competitions, historic vehicle parades, plus spec- tacular arena displays.
