News Cork achieves Healthy City status

Recognition. Ireland’s second city achieves worldwide designation

Cork has been designated a ‘Healthy City’ by the World Health Organisa- tion, highlighting it as a city that is prioritising the health of its citizens. Ireland’s second city joins Galway, Waterford and Belfast in achieving the designation and is now one of only 93 cities around the world to have been recognised in this way. Cork City Council, University College Cork, Niche Community Health Project and the Health Service Executive (HSE) worked together to develop the health profile for the city, which supported the application to the WHO for Healthy City status.

The city had to demonstrate that health is a core value for the city administration and that the vision, values and strategy for the city are translated into action for health through planning.

HSE reveals service plan for 2012

BUDGET OUTLINE

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has published its National Service Plan setting out the type and volume of health and social care services that it will provide within its allocated €13.317 billion budget. The Budget 2012 outlined a

€750 million total cost reduc- tion for the HSE in 2012 and this follows budget reductions of €1.75bn in the past two years. Staff numbers have also been cut by around 8,700 since their peak in 2007.

Included in the plan are investments of €20m for

operations for the HSE South, said: “The HSE welcomes the designa- tion of Cork as a Healthy City and we are delighted to be an integral part of the development of the city as a healthy place to live and work. We fully support the Healthy Cities concept as the most effective way to promote health for the citizens of Cork city.”

Dr Elizabeth Keane, director of public health, also welcomes the

designation. She said: “Our health is our wealth. The health of every Cork man, woman and child is precious and must be protected. This desig- nation in making Cork a healthier city provides a great opportunity to improve the health of all Cork people. Credit is due to all those who collaborated to achieve this designation. The challenge now is to continue the work of making Cork a healthier place for all of us to live.”

primary care, €23m to progress NSE National Clinical Programmes and a growth of over 100,000 medical cards. Chief executive officer of the HSE Mr Cathal Magee said: “2012 will be a very chal- lenging year for the health services. In the last two years, reductions in health expendi- ture have been achieved largely through a combination of procurement efficiencies, successive drug price reduc- tions and staff costs. “A key driver of cost reductions for 2012 will be the exit of a further 3,000 staff from the health services. Together with a budget reduction of €750m, the challenge will be to accelerate the implementation of the National Clinical Programmes and the new models of care and continue to drive efficien- cies in order to offset the impacts on frontline services.”

The 16-month training programme offers an oppor- tunity to those currently employed as dental nurses to achieve a formal award. It is modular in design and delivery will be supported by video-conferencing and distance learning methods.

It will be offered in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Waterford, Tralee and Limerick, with regional centres being made available pending the required number of students applying for these centres.
