A survey of more than 300 dentists has raised the alarming possibility that as many as 1,000 jobs may be lost in the dental industry in the coming year (see news, page 7). Since the demise of the Celtic Tiger, the Irish Dental Association (IDA) has regularly highlighted the severe cutbacks to the medical card and PRSI schemes, and how they will and are affecting the oral health of the population. But this survey now shows the effect


these cuts are having on dental professionals, which in turn will yet again see patient care suffer further.


While Ireland has long seen dental professionals leave to work in the UK, Europe and the US to further their careers, many returned to these shores to work in or set up in practice later on. However, if this acceleration in the brain drain continues – the IDA reckons 2,000 jobs have already been lost in the last two years – then what incentives

The oral health of the nation is already suffering and, if these job cuts are realised, then a whole generation could be facing a painful future, both patients and dental professionals alike.
