Aesthetic restorations Good handling and

predictable results

with Venus Diamond A

30-year-old female patient pr esent ed with two aged amalgam resto-

rations which were failing at the margins. They were unsightly, especially the UR6, which was visible when she smiled. Appearance was important to the patient and her dentition was otherwise well kept. The options for replacing

the failed amalgam restorations were discussed with the patient. These included composite, amalgam, glass ionomer and ceramic restorations. Venus Diamond was chosen as the preferred restorative mate- rial and a treatment plan was formulated. Dr David Wilson uses Venus composite widely in his daily

practice for a range of resto- rations from medium-sized posterior to highly aesthetic anterior. He has a special interest in cosmetic, restorative and implant dentistry, and a prefer- ence for minimally-invasive techniques. David said: “In my experience, composite restora- tions have a better appearance and greater longevity than those with glass ionomer. I prefer to use composite materials for small to medium restorations and ceramics for larger cases.” In this case the treatment began with the removal of

the old restorations and some caries, following topical and local anaesthetic (4.4ml Lido- caine/Adrenaline). The cavities were prepared using slow and high-speed handpieces, then thoroughly washed and dried without dessicating the tooth surface. The surfaces were etched using iBond 35 Gel Etch (enamel margins for 30 seconds and dentine for 15 seconds). iBond Total Etch was then applied and light-cured for 20 seconds. Marginal adaptation was aided by clear matrix bands and

interproximal wedges. Venus flow (A2 shade) was used to line the cavity base, and then the cusps were built up indi- vidually with Venus Diamond (A1 shade). The occlusion was then adjusted slightly, prior to finishing with diamond paste and polishing discs. Dr Wilson prefers to use the

layered build-up technique. He believes that, “combined with the right material, this gives a great aesthetic result and much less post-operative sensitivity. In this case, all the Heraeus materials used performed very well. The cost of these products compares very well with others. However, the primary consideration was good handling properties
