Strouts Point Wharf Company in South Freeport has been busy all winter. They have installed a re-tractable thruster in a J-160 . They also installed all new electronics.

A Concordia 39 was in to have her bottom refastened. They replaced some planks and laminated in some sister frames. Once this job was completed they did her annual maintenance.

A Hinckley 44-foot Talaria was in to be Awlgripped. Other boats waiting to be Awlgripped includes an Alerion and a Banks Cove 22.

A 40 foot Alden sloop was in for a new holding tank. They also did her annual maintenance at this time.

A 24-foot Norwegian Nidelv has been re-powered. She originally had a Volvo diesel and this has been replaced with a Yanmar.

An upcoming project is on a wooden 30- foot Concordia, which had been built by Bud Macintosh. They will refasten her deck frames and deck. There also may be other work too.

They just purchased a new P. & H. Crane, 15 ton all-wheel steer for the yard. As for the marina aspect of the yard all the docks are full again this year.

Johnson’s Winter Yacht Care &

Storage in Harpswell has a lobster boat in the shop. They have removed the forward part of her platform and are beefing up the engine beds and realigning the engine. They are also doing several other odds and ends on her.

For those looking for a storage facility for next year they have inside heated storage available at a reasonable rate. Interested call 833-0991.

Custom Composites in West Bath is working on a number of custom composite components for an 80 foot motor yacht. This will keep them busy for a number of months. They also have been working, now finished, on the molds for rowing shells for a company in Bristol Rhode Island.

Pemaquid Marine in Pemaquid launched four new Banks Cove last year, the first ones under the new owners of the yard. These new owners have worked hard to upgrade the quality of construction, finish and overall performance of their boats. All boats are custom built to order, after extensive consultation with the owner, so much of the layout and all of the options are open to discussion. Consequently, no two are alike.

The 2011 boats included M’STR, their first center console built with a T-Top, which was designed specifically for the boat. Now an option available on all boats, the T-Top will be available as either canvas or hard top. GYPSY TOO was built for a new owner who is 88 years young. This man knows boats. He was an officer in the U. S. Navy, worked for Alden Yachts and has owned many boats, throughout his lifetime. A few years ago, a medical condition resulted in having one of his legs fused, which made using any of his existing boats difficult, if not impossible. We worked with him to create a boat which gets him back on the water again doing one of the things he enjoys most. A custom dashboard was designed to accommodate his outstretched leg; a Stidd seat with full power was installed to enable him to move up, down, backwards, forward and all around with the push of a button; a custom helm was configured to assure the owner had all mechanical and safety controls within reach, including a tilt steering station; a custom removable teak step along with custom stainless steel handrails were installed to aid the owner in getting on and off the boat.

SHERYL DIANE is the little sister to the owner’s larger Eastbay boat with all paint, cushion and canvas colors designed to match it.

ELFIE’S RETREAT II was built without the signature varnished wood trim which Banks Coves are known for. All hand rails, knees, fiddles, hatches and coamings were fabricated out of composite material. A custom guest seat was designed to fit in between the two interior cabin seats when needed. When not being used, the seat is mounted inside the v-berth. The boat also has a custom lifting system incorporated in the construction of the boat which will enable her to be lifted out of the water with the owner’s crane. In addition, she is the first Banks Cove to be delivered outside of the US. Her home port is in Nassau, Bahamas.
