March 2012 MAINE COASTAL NEWS Page 11. Commercial Fishing News NEWSFROM THE DOWNEAST LOBSTERMAN ASSOCIATION From the Director –

February is here and we’ve almost missed the entire winter season. For some, this is a good thing – for some, not so good. I don’t happen to own a snowmobile any longer, and I never did ski, so I’m in a better place than some. All in all, here’s hoping that we have a nice early spring this year. It would be good to be able to get the boat ready when the wind isn’t blowing and the wind chill is not below zero.

We had our D.E.L.A. Board of Director’s meeting last Saturday evening at the Dockside Restaurant in Belfast. There was a good attendance, considering that the weather was a little slippery due to the snow and freezing conditions on the roads. The food was great and we all had a pretty good time. We discussed the upcoming season, how the prices will probably be running this year and the changes ahead of us. We are continuing to work with Jon Johansen of the Maine Coastal News which is still a work in progress and hope to fine tune our news as time goes on. The Board of Directors want to have Maine Coastal News sent to our members as a membership benefit much the same as our newsletter was sent. We are working on the mailing list now. If your address has changed, please contact me with your correction. If you prefer to have the news sent to you via e-mail, let me know and we can also arrange to send it that way. Bangor Savings Bank is having a non profit community grant program called “Giv- ing Back to Maine Communities.” The voting period will be open for votes from January 23rd to March 5th. The voting site is: www.bangor.com/cmm. Please take a look – we’re asking for your support and vote for Downeast Lobstermen’s Association which is listed in “other” of the Downeast section of the list. If you click on “other” and start to type Downeast—it will come up automati- cally. We hope that membership and every- one that wants to help us support our Tradi- tional lobster industry will cast their vote. D.E.L.A. is a registered non profit association that is independently funded.

We are now getting ready for the Maine

Fishermen’s Forum this March 1st thru March 4th.

This is typically from Thursday to Sun-

day. The admission is free for day visits and the seminars are available for all to attend. We have the Decompression Chamber also which in explanation of everyone who has asked what it is, it is the time when you can sit down, relax, have a bite to eat or drink and listen to music played by musicians and en- joy a little story telling. Brian Robbins is at the helm for this and everyone is welcome to come along and tell your story. There is also a session with Ben Fuller of Penobscot Ma- rine Museum and Jon Johansen of Maine Coastal News.

They will have historical pictures and accounts of maritime history such as the “Hey day of Lobster Boat Racing.” There will also be updates with Jessica Joyce of Gulf of Maine Research Institute, Dana Morse, Sea Grant and Monique Coombs, Maine Seafood Marketing Network.

The new Commissioner will be in atten- dance, “Meet and Greet the New Commis- sioner.”

There will also be an opportunity to meet the Marine Resource Committee. Please come along and meet the people that are working with our marine industry.

The Lobster Institute will be celebrating their 25th Anniversary at 1:00 on Saturday. There will be a celebration cake and a lot of Lobster Institute history. This represents a lot of research and participation in the indus- try over the past 25 years.

The Maine Lobster Promotion Council will also be hosting a seminar on Friday from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. This will be an informative update on where our marketing is headed for the new season.

Downeast Lobstermen’s Association is hosting the two sessions that I just told you about. Please join us at these seminars if you attend the Forum. There is a lot more of great interest also. The Forum Board of Directors has spent a lot of time preparing for each seminar that they host. The Food is also donated for the Fish Reception by the Board of Directors either donating it themselves or
