Rarely seen Silver Service from cruiser USS PORTLAND featured in Port of Portland exhibit
When Curator of Exhibits Chris Hall was prowling the Portland waterfront in search of material for the Port of Portland exhibit, he was led to what seemed to be a mostly forgot- ten and neglected storeroom. There he was shown the 20-piece engraved silver service that the city had presented in 1934 to the crew of the cruiser USS PORTLAND when the ship visited its namesake port. The service is now on loan from the U.S. Navy to MMM and is a popular piece of the exhibit. When the exhibit is taken down in May, the service will remain on loan at MMM for safekeeping. You can read the story behind Chris’ waterfront adventure in the next Rhumb Line, which members should receive in early March. And of course, don’t miss the opportunity to see the silver service in person in Port of Portland.
2012 marks 50th year for Maine Mari- time Museum with special events & activities throughout the year During 2012, Maine Maritime Museum will commemorate 50 years of preserving and educating about Maine’s maritime heritage. MMM will celebrate with tall ship visits, special events and programs that will pay homage to those who have been instrumental in ensuring its success and sustaining it for future generations to enjoy. Initiatives in- clude a cooperative boatbuilding venture with The Apprenticeshop in Rockland,
which began at MMM and which is celebrat- ing its 40th anniversary; and a regional mar- keting project, funded in part by the Maine Office of Tourism, to bring greater attention to the maritime history and culture of Maine. If you’re not already a member, now would be a perfect time to become one so that you can take advantage of the benefits such as re- duced fees on events and activities, free admission to the Museum and invitations to special events. Watch for more information in the upcoming Rhumb Line, as well as in future Lookout e-newsletters. You can also follow the Museum on Facebook and Twitter.
Pulitzer-winning journalist to discuss book about her family and a deadly Newfoundland storm
On Sunday, March 4, at 2 pm, MMM and the Maine Irish Heritage Center will host Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Barbara Walsh as she discusses her latest book Au- gust Gale, a personal story about her father, his relationship with her grandfather, and a 1935 storm that shattered the lives of many families of Newfoundland schooner fisher- men. As she recreates the scenes of the violent hurricane and a small boy’s past, she holds onto a hidden desire to heal her father and redeem the grandfather she never met. This free lecture will be held at the Maine Irish Heritage Center, 34 Gray Street, Portland (on the corner of State and Gray). A book signing will follow.
Become a better sailor in Sailing Skills & Seamanship, March 6-22; certificate exam proctored if desired
Improve your sailing skills by enrolling in the Sailing Skills and Seamanship course taught by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxillary. The course runs Tuesday and Thursday eve- nings, March 6 through 22 (six sessions), 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Designed for both experienced and novice sailboat operators, the course covers a broad range of subjects such as how
a boat sails, reaching and sail adjustments. Maneuvers from tacking and jibing to an- choring are addressed, as are aids to naviga- tion and rules of the nautical road. A boating safety course certificate, which is required to operate a boat in most states and Canada, is provided to those who successfully com- plete an optional exam at the end of the course. Many insurance companies offer dis- counts to boat owners who have a certificate.
SailMaine completes Capital Campaign for New 420 Fleet
PORTLAND – SailMaine, a non-profit orga- nization that supports sailing in Maine at the grass-roots, community level, has success- fully completed its 420 Capital Campaign with over $45,000 raised. In early September, SailMaine received the “new-to-us” fleet of twenty 420’s, which has allowed SailMaine to continue to grow programs for beginners, youth sailors and competitive high school racing teams.
SailMaine is southern Maine’s only community sailing organization, dedicated to making the enjoyment of our waters under sail accessible to all. 40% of SailMaine’s funding comes from community support through individual and corporate donations. This support makes scholarship programs and class subsidies for youth possible. SailMaine programs provide Casco Bay
area schools with a competitive Spring and Fall High School Racing Program that serves 150 high school students each year. The racing program has been growing over sev- eral years and the current fleet needed updat- ing. Several hundred more children and adults will also use the new fleet of 420’s in SailMaine’s summer programs. Last year, SailMaine provided the Casco Bay area com- munity over 34,000 hours on the water. The SailMaine Capital Campaign re- ceived both corporate and individual contri- butions towards the purchase of the new fleet and wishes to thank all the donors of this campaign. For more information, to learn about all the programs SailMaine has to offer or view the complete list of campaign donors, please visit the SailMaine website at
