Supply chain

supply chain End of Life programme;

• Ensure slow moving inventory is fl ushed out and enough is reserved for after sales support;

• Adapt ERP system parameters to ensure replenishment is not triggered.

Recommendations around approaches for optimising supply chain’s contribution across the product life cycle: A single, one-size fi ts supply chain strategy to address new product development may not exist. However, a bundle of strategies and tactics can be deployed at each of the various phases.

Phase 1: Development/ entry – Innovation, idea generation, concept development and design.

The fi rst stage of the process requires signifi cant collaboration in the supply base. Many organisations omit this or do this insuffi ciently for fear of sharing vital design concepts. This is the stage where suppliers’ inputs are most valued in order to avoid designing in elements of the product that may be costly or diffi cult to manufacture repeatedly.

Suppliers can help with ensuring specifi cation criteria can be met. Supplier audits must be carried out in a thorough manner so as to highlight potential issues that may arise later in the supply chain. Marketing and business development teams will have an understanding of the demand for the product and will be ensuring that suffi cient inventory is in place to support the launch, along with a watertight linkage between sales and operations to ensure the launch is timely and effective.
