Town to lose bus service

A press release from First Buses has confirmed that Looe is to lose its Sunday service on route 81C from Plymouth via Torpoint.

Cornwall councillor for West Looe Edwina Hannaford has expressed her dismay at the axing of the popular route, especially for Plymouth people visiting Looe in the summer.

Harry creates amphitheatre

Seventy-seven-year-old Harry Barnett has been busy creating what he refers to as a ‘special place’ for the community of Looe at the rear of St Martin’s Church Hall.

The pensioner (pictured above), the former port of Looe manager for Cornwall Fishermen, originally volunteered to tidy up a piece of weedy scrubland at the rear of the hall to keep himself busy in his retirement. But as the ground was on a slope, he decided to create a terraced garden.

However, his son who lives in Par, gave him some decking and from there the idea developed to create an open-air theatre for Looe.

Harry, who also does a lot of walking

to keep fit, has so far shifted about four tonnes of earth and done the work by himself. He says he is really enjoying the project and the fact that there will be something of real value for Looe when his project is completed.

‘Most of the work has now been done and I am hoping the area will be ready for use by the summer,’ said Harry.

‘I am really grateful to everyone who has made donations of hard core and slabs, but I am really in need now of some panel fencing, or any other materials which people don’t want and could be of use.’

She said: ‘Councillors were reassured by Cornwall Council that no routes would be lost with the retendering service, yet I find out from a First press release that Looe will be losing a Sunday Service.

‘Over the year Looe has often been described as Plymouth’s playground.

‘Looe’s tourist economy has traditionally relied on day visitors, especially in the winter months.’

First Buses said: ‘Service 81C (Plymouth City Centre – Insworke via Torpoint) is changing slightly from April 1 to accommodate wider alterations being made to the bus network as a result of Cornwall Council’s retendering exercise.

‘On Sundays the timetable overall is being revised to offer greater reliability and provide additional capacity at busy times.

‘However, to make these improvements the journeys that currently extend to Looe will be withdrawn from the timetable.’
