business entity with charitable status. It will now be directly funded, which, it says, will enable it to make improvements to the learning environment and sustain ‘the rich curriculum already on offer’.

The launch was a celebration of the academic, sporting, personal and community achievement which led to the school’s latest Ofsted grading of ‘good with outstanding features’.

This report, alongside excellent exam results, qualified Looe for academy status against the Government’s strict criteria.

Academic excellence was celebrated in a special assembly where early

entry GSCE passes at grade A and A* were recognised. One in four boys in Year 11 have already achieved an A or A* in maths.

Sporting successes of late include Adam Hayler’s selection to play rugby for Cornwall; Chloe Richards playing football in the USA; Ed Smith being selected for Team GB and Helena Simpson playing cricket at county level.

Other achievements include the appointment of Laura Toms as High Sheriff’s Cadet for Cornwall, and Hayley Moore’s award of a scholarship by the East Cornwall Bach Choir.

Looe Community Academy’s charitable status will also enable it to enhance its contribution to the community.

Students have recently raised significant sums for Ellie’s Haven, Children’s Hospice South West, Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Pearl of Africa.

In May Olympic sailing champion Joe Glanfield will visit to present medallions to students on the ‘Be The Best You Can Be! programme; this is part of the academy’s vision to raise aspiration and instill the drive to succeed in its students.
