an option in all states. NRCS offers up to $1,260 for a TSP to prepare a CAP designed to identify site- specific resource concerns on the entire farm, such as nutrient or pesticide run-off risk to a nearby water body, high drift potential due to sprayer type or nozzle configuration, inefficient water use and more. EQIP delivers over $1 billion dollars in Farm Bill

funding annually help farmers and private landowners to implement cutting edge conserva- tion practices. Pest management continues to be one of NRCS’ most popular sign-ups in EQIP, with roughly a third of the 31,960 new contracts in- cluding IPM in 2009. Since 2006, the North Central Grower Incentives IPM

Working Group

(http://nrcs.ipm.msu.edu/) has been working to increase access to EQIP for IPM. Working group funding has been provided from the North Central, Northeastern and Southern Region IPM Centers. For Herbicide-Resistant Pigweed, Control Starts Now

niques, said Herb Ginn, Lawrence County agent for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. “Though pigweed is tough to fight, control is possi-

ble,” he said. Pigweed is a difficult foe for many reasons. It quickly

developed a fierce resistance to glyphosate, the weed can produce millions of seeds per acre, and it grows easily and everywhere. It’s tough, too – after reaching a certain maturity level, chemical control is impossi- ble, prompting farmers to resort to an old weapon: hand-hoeing. “This weed has many enemies, and few, if any,

friends,” he said. “It makes fields ugly, competes with valuable crops by consuming costly fertilizer and water, and robs yield,” he said. “It can grow up to one inch a day, when conditions are right.” There are a variety of control methods for pigweed. When dealing with resistant weeds in soybeans, Ginn

recommends starting out with a clean field by using tillage or a burn-down program. Make sure to put out a residual treatment of Prefix, Dual, Valor or Valor- containing pre-mix such as Valor XLT, Gangster or En- vive. Use Flexstar or Ultra Blazer at full rate from early-

post to 3-4-inch pigweed. Rotate to Liberty Link soy- beans and use Ignite in combination with one of the mentioned residual treatments. With peanuts, there can be resistance to aceto-lac-

tase synthase-inhibitor herbicides, or ALS. These her- bicides kill weeds by preventing plants from producing essential amino acids needed for growth and develop- ment. In this case, there are a couple of options, said Ginn. One option is to use Prowl preplant incorporated, fol-

cross Arkansas, farmers are battling a formidable foe: herbicide-resistant pigweed. But its tough- ness can be blunted with proper control tech-

lowed by Valor, followed by Cadre or Ultra Blazer and 2,4-DB on 3-inch or smaller pigweed. The other option consists of using Prowl preplant incorporated, followed by Paraquat, Storm and Dual at cracking, and then Cobra or Ultra Blazer and Dual Magnum on 3-inch or smaller pigweed. A fact sheet, “Prevention and control of glyphosate-

resistant pigweed in soybean and cotton,” FSA2152, is available online at: www.uaex.edu/Other_Areas/pub- lications/PDF/FSA-2152.pdf.
