Be My Valentine A guy walks into a post office one day to see a middle-aged, balding man standing at the counter methodically placing “Love” stamps on bright pink envelopes with hearts all over them. He then takes out a perfume bottle and starts spraying scent all over them.

His curiosity getting the better of him, he goes up to the balding man and asks him what he is doing. The man says, “I’m sending out 1,000 Valentine cards signed, ‘Guess who?’”

“But why?” Asks the man. “I’m a divorce lawyer,” the man replies.

Dreaming of… When she woke up, a woman told her husband, “I dreamed that you gave me a pearl necklace for Valentine’s Day. What do you think it means?”

“You’ll know tonight.” He said.

That evening, the man came home with a small package and handed it to his wife. Delighted, she quickly opened it, only to find a book entitled “The Meaning of Dreams.”

Volunteers are very helpful Hospital regulations require a wheelchair for patients being discharged. While working as a student nurse, I found one elderly gentleman in the discharge room - already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet - who insisted he didn’t need my help to leave the hospital. After a chat about how rules are rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the elevator. On the way down I asked him if his wife was meeting him. “I don’t know,” he said. “She’s still upstairs changing out of her hospital gown.”

What a Volunteer Crew A fire started on some grassland near a farm. The city fire department was called to put the fire out. The fire was more than the city group could handle. Someone suggested that a nearby volunteer group be called. Though there was much doubt that the volunteer outfit would be of any assistance, the call was made.

The volunteers arrived in a dilapidated old fire truck and rumbled straight towards the fire, stopping in the middle of the flames. The fire- men jumped off the truck and frantically started spraying water in all directions. Soon they had snuffed out the center of the fire, breaking the blaze into two easily controllable parts.

Watching all this, the farmer was so impressed with the volunteer fire department’s work and was so grateful that his farm had been spared that, right there on the spot, he presented the volunteers with a check for $1,000. A local news reporter asked the volunteer fire captain what the department planned to do with the funds.

“That oughta be obvious,” he said, wiping ashes off his coat. “The first thing we’re gonna do is get the brakes fixed on that darn old fire truck.”

Overheard at the World Volunteer Conference Response to comment that volunteers may be considered amateurs: Remember that Noah’s Ark was built by amateurs, and the Titanic was built by professionals.
