ONBOARD Getting afl oat SALTERNS

Thanks for the Memory

As well as the pretty Tela day-sailer on our stand, Salterns builds the famous and very popular 19ft (5.8m) trad-GRP, gaff -rigged Memory boats – open (with a tiny cuddy cabin under the foredeck) or cabin (with more accommodation). Less well known is the little

Wagtail, the baby of the range at just 12ft 6in (3.8m). It’s in heavy lay-up GRP, clinker eff ect and weighs in at 140kg – so another seaworthy little boat, with a loose-footed (outhaul supplied) gunter rig. £7,300 inc VAT.

STIRLING AND SON Will’s other boat is a cutter yacht

It is quite likely, as we write before the event, that the Will Stirling dinghy on our stand is actually being built for the boat in this photo! Integrity (Yard News, CB282), is a gaff cutter-rigged yacht designed and built by Will in the manner of a number of famous Victorian yachts from designers like Beavor Webb, Dixon Kemp and Fife. She’s already planked and decked and will be available in early summer, in time for a full season of sailing. She’s 43ft (13.1m) long, larch on oak, with yellow metal fastenings and a lead keel, all blocks in ash, and on the market at £297,500 + VAT.

NEIL THOMPSON BOATS Norfolk do diff erent

Neil Thompson Boats builds the ‘Norfolk’ range of heavy lay-up GRP yachts and boats. The 17ft (5.2m) open Oyster is unusual for its heavy build, at 675 kg. “It weighs what it would if it were built heavily in wood, so it doesn’t just look like an old wooden boat – it sails like one too,” Neil explains. That means easy motion and manners, stability and seaworthiness. An outboard can be mounted in a transom cut-out – and stowed, in one of two very large lockers forward. It’s a premium product, so not cheap at £21,000. There’s also the 13ft (4m) Urchin, the 25ft (7.6m) Smuggler and, at the top of the range, the steel barge yachts at 45ft (13.7m) and 65ft (19.8m).
