Magnolia picks up The Magic Of Belle Isle The Wagner/Cuban Companies’ Magnolia Pictures has acquired US rights to The Magic Of Belle Isle, a drama directed by Rob Reiner and starring Morgan Freeman, Virginia Madsen, Madeline Carroll, Kenan Thompson and Fred Willard. Magnolia plans a theatrical and video-on-demand (VoD) release in its Ultra VoD programme in the summer. Reuniting with his director from The Bucket List, Freeman plays a famous alcoholic novelist who befriends a single mother on holiday.


Edwin gets AFAs honour Indonesian director Edwin will receive the Edward Yang New Talent Award at the upcoming Asian Film Awards (AFAs) in Hong Kong. Edwin is attending the Berlinale, where his second feature, Postcards From The Zoo, is screening in competition. His first feature, Blind Pig Who Wants To Fly, played widely on the festival circuit and won several awards, including the Fipresci prize at Rotterdam.


Cinéart befriends Carax, Princess Diana, Renoir


BY GEOFFREY MACNAB Benelux distributor Cinéart has pre-bought Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Caught In Flight, the Princess Diana film that was launched to buyers at the American Film Market. The film, which focuses on the


relationship between the princess and heart surgeon Dr Hasnat Khan, will star Naomi Watts. Cinéart’s general manager, Stephan De Potter, confirmed the


acquisition had been made directly from the film’s producer Tim Haslam (former CEO of HanWay Films and founder of Embankment Films). De Potter has also provided


details of the company’s recent pick-ups from last month’s Uni- france screenings. Cinéart has bitten on Christian


Vincent’s Haute Cuisine as well as Renoir, the Gilles Bourdos film about impressionist painter


Lasowski thrills with The Timber


BY WENDY MITCHELL French actress Elisa Lasowski (Eastern Promises) will star oppo- site Josh Peck and James Ransone in Western thriller The Timber, currently shooting in Romania for Los Angeles-based ANA Media. Maria Doyle Kennedy (Albert Nobbs) has also joined the cast, which features Julian Glover, Wil- liam Gaunt and David Bailie.


Anthony O’Brien directs from a


screenplay he co-wrote with Colin Ossiander and Steve Allrich. ANA’s Scott Einbinder (Killer Joe) is producing with Patrick Newall. The story is about two brothers


chasing their dreams, and venge- ance, during the 1898 Yukon Gold Rush. The project is shooting in the Carpathian Mountains and at Bucharest’s MediaPro Studios.

Sundvall to direct second Kepler feature


BY GEOFFREY MACNAB Swedish action director Kjell Sun- dvall (The Hunters 2) has signed on to direct The Paganini Con- tract, the $10m Lars Kepler adap- tation. This is the second in the envisaged eight-film crime series billed as the natural successor to the Millennium trilogy. The first film, The Hypnotist,


directed by Lasse Hallstrom, is midway through shooting in Stockholm, and will be launched across Scandinavia in September. AB Svensk Filmindustri and


Sonet Film AB revealed further plans for the series in Berlin yes- terday. Their strategy is to recruit a major Scandinavian director for each new Kepler movie. Sonet’s Peter Possne has confirmed the producers will be reaching out to Susanne Bier, Mikael Hafstrom and Lone Scherfig, among others. The Paganini Contract is pro-
