GREEN CALIFORNIA SCHOOLS SUMMIT GREEN COMMUNITY COLLEGES SUMMIT Pasadena Convention Center October 17–18, 2011

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2011 Green California Schools and Green Community Colleges summits.

Your presence here reflects a commitment that I share, a commitment to ensuring that California students are educated in healthy, 21st century learning environments, facilities that model efficient use of resources and give students hands-on exposure to sustainable technologies and practices.

I see a huge potential for a win-win-win on energy efficiency and renewable energy in schools: Schools would save money, we’d improve our environment, and all the while create thousands of teachable moments for students.

Public education has an essential role to play in the economic resurgence that all Californians desire, and the preservation of the Golden State’s unsurpassed natural wealth. It could be argued that nothing is more important to the attainment of these goals than what we do day in and day out in our classrooms.

If we are to have a green future, it would be created by individuals. We need individual educators to help young people develop environmental literacy, and individual students to graduate understanding the challenges we face — and armed with the skills they need to meet them.

Through the “Schools of the Future” initiative that I have established, I am doing all I can to bring greatly increased resources to assist you in your efforts on behalf of our students and our state.

I encourage you to make the most of the opportunities that the Summit offers for discovering best practices, new technologies, and partners for the green programs at your campus. An exciting new era is beginning. Your contributions are critical and are very much appreciated.

Sincerely, Tom Torlakson
