Keynote Speaker Carl Pope Chairman, Sierra Club; Co-Founder, Blue Green Alliance
Carl Pope became Chairman of the Sierra Club in 2010, aſter serving for more than seventeen years as Executive Director. A veteran leader in the environmental movement, Mr. Pope has been with the Sierra Club for more than thirty years. In that time he has also served as Associate Conserva- tion Director, Political Director, and Conservation Director. In addition to his work with the Sierra Club, Mr. Pope has had a distinguished record of progressive activism and leadership. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of America Votes and is a member of the Board of Ameri- can Rights at Work and the Blue-Green Alliance. He previously has served on the Boards of the California League of Conservation Voters, Public Voice, National Clean Air Coalition, California Common Cause, Public Interest Economics, Inc., and Zero Population Growth. Mr. Pope was also Executive Director of the California League of Conservation Voters and the Political Director of Zero Population Growth. He is co-author, along with Paul Rauber, of Strategic Ignorance: Why the Bush Administration Is Recklessly Destroying a Century of Environmental Progress, which the New York Review of Books called “a splendidly fierce book.” Mr. Pope’s other books include Sahib, an American Misadventure in India (1971) and Hazardous Waste in America (1981). Mr. Pope gradu- ated summa cum laude from Harvard College in 1967. He then spent two years as a volunteer with the Peace Corps in Barhi, Bihar, India, where he helped communities and families address the hu- man and environmental impacts of overpopulation.
Featured Speaker Tom Torlakson State Superintendent of Public Instruction
As chief of California’s public school system and leader of the California Department of Educa- tion, Superintendent Torlakson applies his experience as a science teacher, high school coach, and state policymaker to fight for our students and improve our state’s public education system. His journey has led him from the classrooms of Contra Costa County’s Mount Diablo Unified School District (where he remains a teacher-on-leave), to the Antioch City Council, Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors, and the California State Senate and State Assembly. During his tenure in the California State Legislature, Torlakson acted to protect education funding, improve student nutri- tion and physical education, and ensure school safety. He also championed legislation to increase funding for textbooks, computers, and other instructional materials and efforts to close the digital divide, eliminate the achievement gap, and reduce the dropout rate. As the chair and founder of the California Task Force on Youth and Workplace Wellness, Torlakson has been a leader on ban- ning junk food from our schools, providing healthier school meals, promoting student health and fitness, and combating diabetes and obesity among our children. Born in San Francisco, Torlakson served as a fireman in the United States Merchant Marine, earning the Vietnam Service Medal. He earned a B.A. in History, a Life Secondary Teaching Credential, and an M.A. in Education from the University of California, Berkeley.
