HEBREW SCHOOLBOYS DO SPLENDID WORK Important Event in History of Hebrew Community Took Place Sunday Calgary Daily Herald, 13 Dec. 1912

An important event in the history of the Hebrew community of Calgary took place

last Saturday. Twenty pupils of both sexes of the recently founded Hebrew school marched from the school, 337 Fourth avenue east to the House of Jacob synagogue to perform an elaborate programme on the occasion of the Maccabean festival. There they sang many Hebrew poems from the ritual and conducted the regular

evening service. Julius Lipitz, a boy of thirteen years of age officiated with a choir of seven other boys, the rest of the pupils responding. At the close of the performance, prizes were awarded to all of the pupils each according to the progress in his studies. J. Diamond, president of the congregation and one of the best patrons of the school distributed the prizes with appropriate remarks. On Sunday previous the pupils were examined by the board and found progressing

wonderfully considering the short time of four months the school has been in existence. The curriculum of the school consists of reading, grammar, translation of the bible, writing Hebrew and Jewish, Jewish history and ritual. There are three classes and the hours are from 4:30pm to 7:30pm. The attendance is excellent. The expenses amount to over $3,000 a year proceeding from tuition fees from $1 to $3 a month. Poor children are admitted free, and from a private subscription of from $6 to $24 a year. The highest subscriber is Mr. J. Diamond with $25 a month and even more when needed. The importance of the school for Calgary which has started a university needs no

pointing out. All know that since a few years the Hebrew language has been recognized on a par with Latin and Greek by all colleges, for only a thorough knowledge of Hebrew is conducing to a good understanding of the biblical text. Should that school find support by the citizens of Calgary at large, it would be possible to form a special class for gentile students. The only drawback at present is the lack of suitable premises. The capacity of the present rooms is already filled up so that they will have to refuse further admissions.
