CONNECTIONS Winter 2012
99 YEARS OF JEWISH SCHOOLS IN CALGARY!! Grade 5 1971, 72
The story “Hebrew Schoolboys Do Splendid
Work” (Calgary Daily Herald, December 13, 1912) on page 3 of Connections says it all – we’ve come a long way!! As we approach the celebration of 100 years of Jewish Education in Calgary, we have so much to be thankful for: the ability to openly teach our children in Jewish schools, a vibrant, embracing community that has supported the education of thousands of Jewish children, and a strong current school that embraces Jewish values as well as education excellence.
Help us cut down on paper – send us your email address (
alumni@cja.ab.ca), we’ll
send you future Connections issues electronically.
Although the study of the Hebrew language
isn’t currently recognized “on a par with Latin and Greek by all colleges” these days, learning Hebrew, Yiddish and Judaic studies remains a cornerstone of our school. On our Grade 9 trip to Israel, students find “it all comes together”. They move into Secondary education with a strong sense of Jewish identity, and then return to the school with their own children. We have had 5 generations pass through our school doors! Keep your eyes out for more information on
our Centennial year and celebrations, 2013. If you want to get involved, email the school
