Friends Select 4th Grader to Play at Carn- egie Hall

n early December, Friends Select fourth grader Ren Yagawara competed


in the Crescendo Interna- tional Music Competition, an annual music competi- tion for youth, and placed fi rst in the junior piano division. Those


who


achieved fi rst and second place from the regional au- ditions, are invited to per- form at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Yagawara will be performing this Sun- day, January 22, 2012. Friends Select lower school music teacher Derek van der Tak was very instru- mental in teaching Yaga- wara the fundamentals and

keeping him interested in piano. From Prekindergar- ten to age fi ve, Yagawara has even taking weekly les- sons with van der Tak. Additionally, Ren is cur-


rently practicing for the Greenfi eld Competition, one of Philadelphia’s pre- miere music competitions. The winner will play with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Kimmel Center.

“Ashley appeared of the shadows in my back alley in the fall of 2002. After I fed her the fi rst time, she rarely strayed from the fi re escape until, with winter closing in, it became clear she would inevitably be joining the “inside” household. Through nearly a decade of war and deception her radiant and loving innocence provided a constant reminder of the beauty and hope of life uncor- rupted by artifi ce. Sadly and suddenly last November; we had to let her leaves us, at 9 years much sooner than anticipated. Deeply missed by her friends and family, Ashley was a well-kept, ladder-climbing secret who would vanish at the sound of the doorbell, so I thought
