Weald of Kent Netball Leagues T

his season has seen our first ever entry into the Tonbridge Netball league, held at Weald of Kent School. Our U15,16 and

1st teams have been competing on Monday and Wednesday nights against a variety of adult and youth clubs. We are currently the only school with teams in the league and the girls have been making Mayfield proud!

The U15 team have come up against some tough opposition but are learning to maintain possession of the ball and to wait for players to become free before getting rid of the ball. They are playing extremely well and should be congratulated for their hard working attitude and sportsmanship.

Our U16 team are having a successful season in Division 5 having won the majority of their matches.

Mayfield first all- girls' school in England to launch a Modern Pentathlon Squad

M

ayfield has become the first all-girls’ school in England

to launch a Modern Pentathlon Squad. In doing so, it is building on its long-standing excellence in equestrian sport and helping to challenge the perception that disciplines like shooting and fencing are ones best left to the boys.

Five members of the Squad entered their first ever competition on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 October,The Sealions and Whitgift Modern Pentathlon and Tetrathon in Croydon, and performed remarkably well against more experienced athletes. In particular Katie Aspinall who reached 3rd place in her category, an excellent achievement!

The Squad train at School in all five events: riding, shooting, fencing, running and swimming. Their aim is to reach the National Pentathlon Championships in June.

New members are always welcome, see Miss Mead for further information.

This team has become more of a mixed team of 2nd and U16 team players that we have called Mayfield 2. All of the girls are playing well and have improved in their tactical awareness as well as their defending. We are hopeful that they will finish the season in March towards the top of their division.

News from the PE Department

On a Wednesday night our 1st team play in Division 2 which is an achievement in itself, as the standard is very high. The team have had some excellent wins and some very close matches, mainly against adult sides. This team have seen a large squad rotate each week and it’s been great to see so many different girls commit to training and the league in order to play at this level every week.

uring October half term, 16 of us went to Club La Santa in Lanzarote, where we all got a chance to try a variety

of fun activities and improve our fitness for the sporting season to come. When we first arrived we got a chance to look around and stock up our fridges for the week, before the excitement began…

The next morning was an early start with pool side aerobics before a 5k run, followed by a delicious buffet breakfast. Over the week we had the opportunity to take part in tennis, swimming, squash, badminton, paddle ball, beach volley ball, zumba, aerobics, yoga, pilates, step, body biking, stretch and relax, to name but a few. Body combat was a particular favourite among us all, along with relaxing by the pool!

Some of us also took part in both the aquathlon and teamed up to represent Mayfield in the triathlon. All who took part did extremely well, particularly since it was a new experience for all. Georgia Weston did especially well, coming 1st in the women’s category.

On one of the days of our trip, we had the morning off, to go to the nearby market where we got the chance to buy some souvenirs, practice our haggling skills and enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine.

Each night at Club La Santa, excellent entertainment is provided for the guests to enjoy. We enjoyed Tribal dancing, a talent show performed by the fitness coaches themselves and our favourite: Flamenco dancing, but much to the Year 8’s disappointment there were no pink birds on the stage.

We all got a chance to get to know girls in different years and have made many funny memories together, such as: throwing ourselves off the diving board and managing to convince Miss Evans and Mrs Whitby to join us, dressing up and decorating the villas for Halloween and also having a great time during the inter-house karaoke, which Glennie won much to our surprise.

Overall we had an amazing time that we will never forget which couldn’t have been possible without the organisation by Miss Evans and Mrs Whitby, so on behalf of the girls we would like to say a massive thank you to them!

e have had over 40 girls training regularly each week in the training sessions that we offer before and after school. This includes girls swimming for their own fitness, modern pentathlon swimmers and

squad swimmers.

This is a huge number but there is always room for more, girls do not need to be part of the swimming squad in order to train with us. We have recently had a gala against Kent College that saw the Inter and Senior teams win by a large margin with some particularly good swimming in the Inter relay teams.

The girls train hard in their swimming and are improving all the time, so it is good to see this training produce such good results. The Junior team were unlucky to lose this age group but were up against a very strong Kent College Junior team. Look out for the results of all the galas on the board in the swimming pool.
