Cracking open Easter

Is this CD-ROM being distributed in your child’s school?

Can you be good without God - is there a scientific basis for morality?

Once again, the HSS will present an event as part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival, sometime between 30 March and 15 April 2012. Exact date and venue will be on our website nearer the time.

When his child came home with a CD- ROM, which tried to make the case for creationism, a parent who is a member of HSS wrote to the head teacher to complain. He also contacted us and we wrote to the Director of Education expressing our concern and requesting that our leaflet be distributed also to redress the balance. This was refused on the grounds that "it was unsuitable for primary children". It had been produced for an adult audience, but we are now having it re-written for young children. The parent himself received no satisfaction from the head teacher so he wrote to the Director of Education himself. He received a reply to say that she had instructed the Parental Complaints Officer to investigate and it had been concluded that: "the Service’s criteria had been breached in that the content of the CD ROM was overtly evangelical and was therefore inappropriate for dissemination to individual children in the manner that took place". It’s not much, but it is a start. Members of the education committee will be meeting representatives of local education authorities and it would be very helpful to us if more parents would write to their Directors of Education to complain.
