Unique heritage award gets off the ground

THURNHAM is believed to be unique among parish councils in establishing an award to recog- nise contributions to Kent's heritage. The parish council is inviting entries for the first

of what will become an annual award. The award is in memory of Lord Sandy Bruce- Lockhart, the former leader of Kent County Coun- cil and chairman of English Heritage, who died three years ago, aged 66. The man behind the idea is Thurnham council-

lor John Horne, who was previously heritage champion of Maidstone Borough Council. He said the award was open to projects involv-

ing heritage in the widest sense. Mr Horne said: "Do you think you have designed an award-winning building; have you established

a new wood or wild flowermeadow? We are look- ing for a real contribution to the county's heritage." Entries will be judged by the parish council, English Heritage, KCC and MBC. Applications should be emailed to thurnham- parishcouncil@sherriebabington.co.uk by the end of January. The award itself is made from wood salvaged from the surrounds of Thurnham Castle.

Beacon proposal PARISH councillors have discussed the possibility of lighting a beacon on Thurnham Hill at the cas- tle site as part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee cel- ebrations on June 4. Registration and insurance issues are being checked.

Poor lighting worries parents

POORlighting onWare Street is causing concern among residents, evenmore so during the darker winter months. One worried father addressed parish councillors about the issue at their monthlymeeting. Jeremy Davis, of Peverel Drive, said

the problem is particularly bad between Averenches Road and Hockers Lane, where he pushes his two young children to a day nursery. He said there are security and danger

issues as it is an “ideal place if someone wanted to lurk”.MrDavis said he walks with a torch. There are dark patches op- posite the pub where the lights are hid-

den by trees and these should be cut back, he added. Chairman PeterWaite said there had

been talks about installing a light under the railway bridge, though no decision yet. Ward councillor Nick deWiggondene

said sites for possible lighting outside Nos 90 and 92Ware Street had been dis- cussed with KCC and that local county councillor Jenny Whittle was willing to fund it from her member’s budget. The intention was to survey nearby residents but members felt that views about the desirability of street light- ing should be sought from awider area.
