IF you are dreaming of setting sail on a flotilla holiday, or even buying a boat, your first port of call should be a Royal Yachting Association training course.
Shore-based navigational school Excel
Yachting, based at Bearsted, has been launched by experienced yachtsman and instructor Terence Lee to provide a range of tuition.
Courses cater for all levels, whether you are totally inexperienced, a dinghy sailor, diver, sea angler, or have been sailing for a number of years and now wish to sharpen your skills. Principal and chief instructor Terence, who has lived locally for more than 20 years, brings a vast wealth of knowledge to the business. He has sailed more than 140,000 miles over his 40-year sailing career, having raced around the world and delivered yachts on behalf of owners to many different countries.
He has also spent many years teaching practical and theory Royal Yachting Association courses to adults and children. Training ranges from a two-day basic navigation and safety course, providing the minimum knowledge to be able to go to sea, through to intensive courses in navigation and meteorology and more advanced tuition for the Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate.

There are also special rates for company groups and one-to-one tuition. For an unusual Christmas gift, there are still a few places available on the Day Skipper five- day intensive course starting on January 9. In conjunction with transatlantic sailors Chris and Carol Evans, the school is presenting “Across the pond and beyond” at the Early Bird restaurant and bar, Grovewood Drive North, Weavering, on Sunday, November 27, when the couple will discuss the challenges of long distance voyages.
