Community News A Royal Opening for Bristol’s

Specialist Nursing Home in Kingswood

HRH The Earl of Wessex carried out the formal opening cere- mony for Mortimer House in Kingswood in late October. The purpose-built home was 18 months in the making, and has 28 bedrooms. 24 people currently live in the new home, which was completed in May 2011. It has filled up fast because no other nursing home in Bristol caters specifically for people with both learning disabilities and dementia.

HRH The Earl of Wessex was taken on a tour of the home, including its landscaped gardens, and met the chief architect,

several of the charity’s Trustees, and the Chief Executive of NHS Bristol, Deborah Evans. The home had arranged for one of its residents, Betty Bickerstaff, who has been with the Trust for over 20 years, to present a posy to The Prince. (photo above ) Mortimer House is the first specialist home of its kind in Bristol. Every aspect of this £3.3 million project has been designed to enable its residents to manage their lives as inde- pendently as possible, without depending solely on medica- tion. The home has been built by Spectrum Housing Group and is run by Milestones Trust, a Top 300 charity supporting people with learning disabilities and mental health needs in the Bristol area.

Two New PCs Have Joined The Kingswood Team

Dom Pickett and Nick Smart have joined Lee Hum- phreys as neighbourhood PCs, working alongside PCSOs Christian Abbott, Hugh Barnes, Ian Burton, Switri Kaur, Nick Pearce, Kay Rees, Craig Waters and Emyr Watson and Special Constables Maxwell Bayliss, Chris Davis and Andrew Morris.

Dom Pickett joined Avon and Somer- set police in 2003 and has spent most of his service in an emergency re- sponse team, answering 999 calls across South Gloucestershire, after spending two years with the priority crime team, targeting persistent of- fenders. He said: "I wanted to join a neighbourhood team as I am inter- ested in working with young people to give them a positive focus and steer them away from trouble. Outside work I'm a mountain guide and expe- dition leader and I hope to be able to take local young people on expedi- tions to help them gain life skills like team work, with the aim of inspiring them and giving them the confidence for the future."

Nick Smart joined Avon and Somer- set police in 2006. He too has spent most of his service in an emergency response team, with some time in the priority crime team. He said: "I wanted to join the Kingswood neighbourhood as I was looking for a new challenge. I hope to bring fresh ideas to help the community and decrease crime."
