31 OUR STORY

The Weirs Times was first published in 1883 by Mathew H. Calvert. The newspaper, then named Calvert’s Weirs Times and Tourists’ Gazette, was published until Mr. Calvert’s death in 1902.

One of the most remarkable features of the publication was a map of Lake Winnipesaukee which occupied the center spread of the paper. Readers will find the same map reprinted on the center pages of this, and every issue.

The new Weirs Times was re-established in 1992 and strives to maintain the patriotic spirit of its predecessor as well as his devotion to the interests of Lake Winnipesaukee and vicinity.

4 For Newt

To The Editor: American prosper-

ity and freedom is being destroyed by President Barack Obama. To re- verse this trend America needs a leader who will bring about a political sea change. Our drift to- wards socialism will not be halted by an efficient manager but by one who has the vision to change things and has already demonstrated this. That person is Newt Gingrich. His accom- plishments include a bal- anced budget for the first time in 40 years and the budget surpluses that followed during his ten- ure as speaker. Yes, even though the Democrats called it the “Clinton sur- plus” it was the Republi- can House under Gingrich leadership which actually produced them. This fact demonstrates what Presi- dent Reagan meant when he said a person can get a lot accomplished if he doesn’t care who gets the credit. Speaker Gingrich also

led in producing some long overdue welfare re- form legislation despite the yowling from the Dem- ocrats. About Speaker Ging-

rich’s so called “baggage,” we should remember we are not electing a Pope and should take him at his word as we have done for others when he says he has matured. And does it really matter? Should we base our decisions on tabloid headlines or po- litical talking points when the fate of the nation is in the balance? Yes, Speaker Gingrich

had ruffled some feath- ers during his time in the House and our establish- ment leaders don’t like that. But the times call for some serious ruffling and the electorate is search- ing for a candidate who will draw a line, not reach across it. My vote will be cast for

Newt Gingrich who will do what is necessary to bring us back from the brink. He represents a fresh, passionate approach to governance and the will to use it.

wives attend. This is an overt way to “break the tie.” This past July I had

the honor and privilege of hosting Mrs. Ann Romney in my home. She grew up the daughter of a small town mayor and is hum- bled that she would be in the race for First Lady of the United States of America. Mrs. Romney is the mother of five and grandmother of ten with still having time to serve her community and be an advocate in raising awareness for Multiple Sclerosis. Her presence on the trail is inspiring and is a perfect reflection of her husband’s character and should remind us of the challenges that she has overcome and the fam- ily’s belief that anything is possible. Together and as a family they have fol- lowed through with em- powerment and integrity in all they endeavor. There is no doubt that they will bring back a gracious and unpretentious presence to Washington. I first met Gov. Romney

in 2007 and he has consis- tently made his message clear that he believes in ALL the people of America and our “can do” attitude. Romney with his expertise in economics will be in Washington and on day one will bring cheers from the populous nationwide with his lesser government plan road to recovery.

A National Security Threat?

To The Editor: This letter liberally ref-

erences Brig. Gen. Jim Cash’s article entitled “Another Government Cover-up” in the January 2011 edition of Military. I agree with his assessment that the contrail observed off the coast of California in November 2010 re- sembled a missile launch contrail, not an aircraft contrail. In the 1980’s Brig. Gen.

Cash was a command di- rector and assistant direc- tor of operations for the North American Air De- fense Command (NORAD). NORAD is responsible for the detection and report- ing of aircraft and missile threats to the President for action. Brig. Gen. Cash was a USAF fighter pilot for over 25 years. Why did the Obama ad-

ministration put out infor- mation that the contrail recorded off the Califor- nia coast was made by an aircraft. My initial reaction was the contrail came from an inadvertent launch of a missile by one of our Navy’s surface ships or a submarine. Although this continues to be a possibility, I be- lieve the likelihood of this event is somewhat remote because of the number of people who would have been aware of this occur- rence. The other possi- bility is the launch came from a foreign submarine,
