An evening with...Jill Scott

Hotminute took off to the O2 Brixton Academy for Neo Soul Queen Jill Scott’s exclusive London show.

After a unique supporting act that saw DJ Semtex light up Brixton Academy with just his decks and some bangin’ tracks. Jill opened the show. Ms. Scott was not MESSIN, there was a LET’S GET DOWN TO BUSINESS fierce attitude never seen before.

She stepped on stage and kicked things straight off with ‘Shame’ followed by ‘Give Me’ then ‘Hate On Me’. There was no time for introductions, I don’t think she even paused for breath between songs. The band ignited the opening performance and it was clear from Jill’s first note, tonight’s show was gonna be OUT OF THIS WORLD! And most definitely all about real good music, no bubblegum, just pure unadulterated GOOD ASS MUSIC! I’ll probably say this a thousand times throughout this article but Jill, THANK YOU!

Effortlessly stunning in a simple & becoming blue deep v babydoll! Funked up with some quite frankly fierce striped leggings & even fiercer (not sure that’s a word) black ankle boots - they looked like something straight outta Fifth Element with that crazy curved heel. Seriously don’t know how Jill walked in those let alone performed. Sensible to change into those comfy Ugg type boots three quarters of the way through the performance....we felt your pain girl!! Besides which Jill strolled on with soo much swag in them there was just no room to hate.

So back to the FIERCE (Soz I’m not channeling Tyra it’s really the only word fit to describe Jill’s performance!) show. With the live performance Jill gave new slants to fan faves like ‘The Way’ with the injection of African drums. The most compelling and awe inspiring of these though was Jill’s diva moment and I don’t mean that in a derogatory way. I mean real diva moment when she gave us the operatic version of ‘He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat)’. Just like her

backing singers ‘The Pipes’ Jill has some insane pipes of her own. That performance had me close to tears yeah I said it TEARS!! You had to be there it was moving!

With Jill’s show there were those moments where you could close your eyes and just feel the vibrations of her voice and the instruments resonate through you. Soul stirring and emotional, it transports you to a higher plane.

The super fans in the audience were kept happy with discography faves like ‘Long Walk’, ‘Golden’, ‘Crossed My Mind’ and ‘Slowly, Surely’, whose funked up twist was one of my fave performances that and the kick ass drum solo by Rashid Williams.

Jill of course hit play on new album faves ‘Rolling Hills’, spoken word piece ‘Womanifesto’ and ‘So In Love’ performed with Anthony Hamilton stand in V Rone who handled the duet effortlessly. Jill’s long awaited return to the London stage was worth the wait, she reigned the throne. My only disappointment, that she didn’t play another of my faves... ‘Gettin In The Way’ but see that’s the problem with great artists like Ms Scott, there’s just too many hot tracks to fit into one show!!

Sorry if you missed the show but to ease the situation we have the perfect remedy, hit up iTunes for a copy of Jill’s album ‘Light Of The Sun’. Obviously it doesn’t quite compare to Jill live but it’s the next best thing! And if that’s not enough then check out our exclusive interview with Miss Scott on page 18.
