President’s Message

The Good Work That We Do Louise A. Lock

T

o use my favorite sport’s terminology, I am now at the 50 yard line as President of the MAJ. As always, MAJ succeeds because of a team effort

which combines the consistent efforts of our hardworking MAJ staff with the unwavering dedication and engagement of our Officers, the Board of Governors, the Section and Committee leaders and our members.

Community Involvement In addition to the important endeavors we undertake

on behalf of our clients, many of our members give generously of their time and their resources to the many community outreach and volunteer activities in which MAJ participates. On October 1, 2011, MAJ participated in yet another,

successful program in conjunction with the Baltimore City Fire Department and their annual Trill Show. Because of the MAJ sponsorship, the Fire Department is able to able to promote fire safety, prevention and educational programs within the community. MAJ provides significant financial support and our members volunteer their time on the day of the program to assist wherever we are needed. During this 2011 Holiday Season, the Young Lawyers

Section is partnering with the Women’s Caucus and expanding the scope of its efforts to allow needy children in our State to enjoy the holidays. MAJ, along with the Salvation Army Angel Tree program, has set a goal of providing gifts or stocking stuffers to at least 10 children in seven areas: Baltimore City and Baltimore, Carroll, Howard, Anne Arundel, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. Te MAJ office and several of our members’ offices have been designated as drop off / pick up locations for the gifts. Troughout the year, MAJ is also asking those attending

any of our educational programs to bring personal items and toiletries for woman and children seeking refuge from

domestic violence at Arden House, a shelter organized by the YWCA of Anne Arundel County. Te MAJ Foundation will also be working on various

projects in the next number of months so stay tuned for announcements about the ways in which you can contribute to the Foundation’s endeavors. Tis Spring, MAJ hopes to reinvigorate its Public

School Awareness Program and will ask members to volunteer again by participating in career day programs and educating students about the civil justice system at schools throughout the State.

Educational Programs Tis fall, MAJ has offered a number of terrific

educational programs. Just when we think MAJ has hit the high mark, we all marvel at the results achieved by MAJ’s Program Manager for Conference & Sponsorship, Jenna Kellam, working in conjunction with our Education and Programs Chairs and Section leaders. All three of our fall programs - Technology, Workers’ Compensation and Auto Negligence, exceeded expectations both financially and in numbers attending. Don’t miss the upcoming winter and spring programs, and in particular, our Trial Skills seminar set for April 27, 2012, where nationally renowned speakers will take the lead.
