The trend is rising for alarm compa- nies to offer customers more security tools that allow use and access to their alarm systems through latest generation features, particularly through mobile applications. As such, many security sys- tems are now remotely monitored from an iPhone and iPod Touch, from a Google Android PDA phone, or other PDAs and cell phones.
t some point over the past 12 months, a vast majority of us have downloaded an application (apps) to a smart phone, tablet or laptop. Whether it is Angry Birds for the iPad, The Weather Channel for the An- droid or your favourite magazine or newspaper for the BlackBerry, everyone knows what apps are and all of us want the latest “must have.”

For the security industry, mobile apps are being trumpeted as the up-and- coming trendsetter, particularly because the ones currently on the market are tai- lored to on-the-go accessibility to one’s home or business remotely from any- where on the planet. Making life easier for users is the ultimate purpose of secu- rity-related apps and this trend doesn’t seem to be going away.

According to Robin Stennet, director of small business marketing for Boca Raton, Fla.-based ADT Security Serv- ices, the big advantage of modern security surveillance systems is their abil- ity to sync up with mobile, handheld devices. Mobile apps can come preloaded on the handheld device as well as can be downloaded, most for free, by users from app stores or the Internet. The mobile app has become one of the most popular features of the smart phone. “Smart phones just got smarter,” touts Stennet. “Through a wireless Internet connection you can arm or disarm your alarm system, receive text and video alerts from your home, view real-time video, adjust lights or thermostats and more by using a web-enabled mobile de- vice to a home or business security surveillance system.”
