Westchester County Business Journal • ARTSWNEWS Summer Reading: Arts Professionals Suggest...

Michael Barrett, Caramoor Center for Music & the Arts I recommend The Noonday Demon (An Atlas of Depression) by Andrew Solomon. It isn’t light summer reading, but since so many of us deal with depression personally, with a friend, family member, or ourselves, it is an important book to read. And as it turns out, it is a good read, full of real stories, challenges, failures, and triumphs.

Michael Botwinick, Hudson River Museum

Venice: Pure City by Peter Ackroyd. The summer cruise ship invasion and the Biennale inundate Venice with people virtually obliterating both its spirit and what is left of it as

a real city of real people. Ackroyd builds a rich and complex reading of Venetian history and myth. At times a little overheated…but that is a small price to pay to get a sense of what the Piazza San Marco felt like to Napoleon.

“Green Washington,” Timothy Grajek. Mixed Media Mamie Duncan Gibbs, Youth Theatre Interactions

How to Listen to God by Charles Stanley. I like it because it's a great meditation book that puts everything that's going on around me in its proper perspective. It shows me how to focus my attention and energy so everyday life doesn't become so overwhelming. It's a great read that will allow you to tap into your inner spirit to become the best "you" you can be.

Peggy Hill, Rye Arts Center Life of the Party: The Biography of Pamela Digby Churchill Hayward Harriman

by Christopher Ogden. It is all in the title. A very fun and fast-pace book. A true survivor at any costs. I would hope this isn't the way to the top any more but you have to admire her chutzpah!

Lisa Robb, Arts Management Consultant

Affirmational: A Short Guide to a Happy Life, Anna Quindlan (favorite line: no one says on their deathbed "I really should have spent more time at the office") Inspirational: Every Man Stands Alone, Hans Fallada (courage and conviction in the face of tyranny) Metaphysical: The Year of the Hare, Arto Paasilinna (it is the year of the rabbit afterall) Criminal: Any mystery by Donna Leon (all are set in and around Venice, Italy - book tickets now!)

Neil Watson, Katonah Museum of Art

Whenever Nick Hornby writes a novel revolving around music, I am there. His most re- cent novel Juliet, Naked is a hands-down winner for a great summer read.

Out of Africa June 3 – July 30, 2011

Joshua Worby, Westchester Philharmonic

Right now I am reading Music Made Me, the memoirs of conductor and living legend Raymond Leppard, who will open the Westchester Philharmonic’s season October 1-2. Having conducted every major orchestra and every major soloist over his 82 years, the book is rich with personality anecdotes, musical insights, and sheer wisdom. It has a forward by no less than Prince Charles, and describes his long friendship with the Queen Mother.

Don’t miss Out of Africa, an exhibition featuring art work of all media inspired by the many cul- tures, landscapes and materials of the African conti- nent. Presented by Ar tsWestchester, Blue Door Artist As- sociation and the

Mount Vernon Public Library, Out of Africa was cu- rated by Luis Perelman and Kathleen Yacoe Skura.

In A Spin on Green, artists address the ever- changing, ever-challenging relationship between man and nature while considering the role art plays in the “Going Green” movement. Showcasing the talent and diversity of the Katonah Museum Artist’s Association membership, the exhibition presents the work of 27 artists who interpret the theme through a variety of lenses and media. Unique pieces of assemblage, photography, sculpture, painting, and collage unite to explore the many shades of "Going Green."
