Caramoor Opens its 66th Annual Summer Music Festival June 25

The line-up for the 66th season of 2011 Caramoor International Music Festival promises to offer enormous appeal to all audiences with a rich array of artists and diverse repertoire from the worlds of classical, jazz, Latin, pop and American Roots music. This iconic summer festival, which is held annually at the Center’s distinguished 90-acre garden estate in Katonah, New York, will run from June 25 to August 10.

The festival’s opening night on June 25 marks the 15th season of the Bel Canto at Caramoor series, directed by Caramoor’s Director of Opera Will Crutchfield, with a vibrant presentation of H.M.S Pinafore by Gilbert & Sullivan. Other season highlights include a 4th of July weekend celebration of American Music; the Orchestra of St. Luke’s symphonic concerts; a wide range of recital and chamber music offerings; a Going Global Festival featuring music from Mali and Brazil; and its 18th annual Jazz Festival.

“I am looking forward, with great anticipation, to this coming summer season at Caramoor, which offers a world tour of music artistry that transcends genre, geography and even time,” says Michael Barrett, CEO and General Director of Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts. “The 2011 festival showcases Caramoor as a unique outdoor venue with tremendous musical variety, performed at the highest level – whether you’re searching for an evening of operatic excitement, a chance to dance in the aisles to West African rhythms, or just a perfect spot to enjoy an afternoon musical picnic with the family.”

KMA Presents Double Solitaire: The Surreal Worlds of Kay Sage and Yves Tanguy

I Saw Three Cities, Kay Sage

From June 5 through September 18, the Katonah Museum of Art (KMA) takes visitors on a journey through the subconscious as it presents Double Solitaire: The Surreal Worlds of Kay Sage and Yves Tanguy. Organized in partnership with the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, NC. Double Solitaire is the first major touring exhibition to explore the dynamic exchange of ideas that shaped the astonishing landscapes of these Surrealist artists. Approximately 25 paintings by each artist – dating from 1937 to 1958 – will be featured, as well as selected photographs and ephemera, which will provide a window into their personal lives.

Sage and Tanguy were inseparable throughout their 15-year marriage, sharing a studio in Woodbury, CT, and communicating only in French until Tanguy’s untimely death in 1955. Both artists sought to create paintings that the French poet André Breton called “peinture-poésie,” a style influenced by poetry and dream-like imagery. However, in spite of their intimacy, the two artists never wanted to be considered a “team of painters.” With the condition that they be placed in separate galleries, a 1954 exhibition at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut, was the closest the works of Sage and Tanguy ever came to being shown together. Enter Double Solitaire – the first exhibition ever to juxtapose their works.

“The Museum is proud to partner with the Mint Museum to organize an exhibition as original and historically significant as Double Solitaire. It has taken us years to bring this complex and ambitious exhibition to these three museums – the Katonah Museum of Art, the Mint Museum, and the Norton Museum of Art – and is well worth every bit of effort,” said Neil Watson, Executive Director of the KMA.

The Katonah Museum of Art is located at 134 Jay Street (Route 22) in Katonah, NY. For more information, please visit www.katonahmuseum.org or call (914) 232-9555.
