SCHOOL HAUNT By Joni Kretzmer

RENOWNED COMPOSER’S PIECE TO BE PERFORMED IN HIS HIGH

Lowell Liebermann chuckles at the title of Chappaqua Orchestra's upcoming concert, Love ‘em and Liebermann to be performed at Horace Greeley High School on May22.

A Horace Greeley graduate himself, Liebermann is one of America's most recorded and performed living com- posers. The May 22 concert at Horace Greeley High School will serve as the New York premiere of Liebermann's Clarinet Concerto.

Talented clarinetist Jon Manasse will perform the Clarinet Concerto and lead the Chappaqua Orchestra in Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet ballet music and Tchai- kovsky's Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fan- tasy. Manasse, who debuted the Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra during the 2009- 2010 season, now teaches at the East- man School of Mu- sic in Rochester.

Lowell Liebermann

Liebermann reflected on the “high quality education” he received during his years at Greeley. He noted a teach- er of particular influence for him, An- gelo Marasco. Marasco worked with the HGHS music department for fifteen years after giving up a career as the di- rector of the band of a cruise ship.

Chappaqua Orches- tra director Michael Shapiro, who will be conducting the May performance, is acquainted with Lie- bermann. Clarinetist Jon Manasse also has ties to the orchestra. “It all just fell together,” Shapiro explains. “We wanted to plan something with them, so we cre- ated the consortium between Manasse, Liebermann and us.”

The two musicians have their own history together as well, which started with their attendance at the Juilliard School of Music. Manasse has performed vari- ous works composed by Liebermann, in- cluding those that ap- peared on Lowell Lie- bermann: Quintets; Six Songs, a CD released in July 2008. Several of his critically acclaimed live

Liebermann’s advice: “Don’t let go of your dreams; if you are determined, you will succeed.”

“Most of my training came from out- side lessons,” says Lie- bermann. Despite this fact, HGHS’ musical staff provided encour- agement for the bud- ding musician, who per- formed at Carnegie Hall at age sixteen. Within Greeley itself, Lieber-

mann participated in chorus, accompa- nied the school orchestra on the piano occasionally, and spent his free time in the music classrooms.

Observing Lowell Liebermann’s suc- cess is likely to hit home for many Greeley students, especially those who wish to pursue a competitive field like music. Liebermann’s advice: “Don’t let go of your dreams; if you are deter- mined, you will succeed.”
