One of my all time favourite guitarists is Chet Atkins. As I mentioned earlier, I recently sang with Frank Vignola. Frank has played with Chet Atkins. Therefore by process of elimination, I figure I’ve played with Chet Atkins too. I like to try and convince myself of that anyway.

My Dad took me to see Fleetwood Mac when I was 8 years old. They are a massive influence and I adore the song ‘Sarah’ from the Tusk album.

I love Soul, Funk and Blues. Hercules by Aaron Neville is a divine tune and everyone should listen to it. I have a great funky version of Etta James’s bluesy W.O.M.A.N. I like it when Funk and Rock or Punk hook up, cross breed and give birth to tunes like ‘Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick’ by Ian Dury and the Blockheads or the Clash’s ‘Overpowered by Funk’. One of my all time favourite songs is ‘I Miss You’ by the Rolling Stones. I think nearly everyone I know has seen me dance on a sofa like a deranged maniac to that one at least once.

My favourite album at the moment is July Flame by Laura Veirs. I’ve been listening to her after several recommendations. Her music isn’t all that far from my own. I also love Feist, especially the album ‘Let it Die’. Another of my all time favourite albums is ‘Hissing of Summer Lawns’ by Joni Mitchell. Nina Simone must get a big shout out. I wish I could have seen her in concert. I’m big Eddi Reader fan. She’s one of the most stunning performers I’ve seen and like Joni she’s been very influential to me. When I was younger and less sure of my own voice, I often had to stop myself singing in a Scottish accent like Eddi’s. I could go on and on about the vast sea of music I love but unfortunately I’m going to have to cut it short with a final mention for two more boys, the wonderful Jose Gonzalez whom I adore and the fabulous Brazilian Joao Bosco, another important influence especially on the guitar playing front.

Bass lines are grrrrreat! Much better than any sugar frosted breakfast item you’ll find in your local supermarket. They’ve definitely become a strong part of my guitar playing and I like to keep things interesting as I am often on my own when I perform. I do however play with other
