The authors:


Dr Al Dowie PhD is the Senior University Teacher at Glasgow University Medical School with responsibility for the Ethics and Law curriculum theme. He chairs the community of practice for ethics theme leaders across the five Scottish medical schools on behalf of the Scottish Deans Medical Education Group. He has a strategic role in contributing to the ethico-legal curricula of the five schools, and has been a medical educator since 1998. He combines undergraduate teaching and educational research with in-service education for hospital doctors.


Dr Anthea Martin BMSc MB ChB LLB MPhil MFFLM DRCOG is a Senior Medical Adviser of the Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland, and an elected board member of the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine. Having combined medical training and clinical practice with undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in law, her work as a legal adviser for medical practitioners is coupled with ethico-legal teaching across Scottish medical schools and providing continuing professional development for doctors.
