‘Made in Britain’ role for Mercato

A business that is helping IBM and global insurer JLT drive down costs and increase sales world-wide with software tools, is the first of its type to be nominated as a world beating British based manufacturer alongside Cadbury’s, Airbus, Astute submarines and Coca Cola. Birmingham enterprise applications provider, Mercato Solutions, has entered the UK’s hall of manufacturing fame thanks to a ‘Made By Britain’ nomination from Shabana Mahmood MP. The company was selected for its

global export and continuous innovation, which reflects a growth in UK based technology manufacturing. Launched by Vince Cable MP,

produce innovative designs as well as contributing to the industry more widely. The panel noted that in his 26 years in the profession working for the likes of Lotus and BMW, Mr Addy had gained numerous patents for his innovative design work on some of the world's most respected internal combustion engines. In his current role as R&D manger at Cubewano, he

perfected a small heavy fuel rotary engine with a high power to weight ratio, which has been successfully used in a project for the US military. Recently he refined the design of the engine’s fuel injection system, reducing fuel consumption by 50 per cent - an innovation likely to receive another patent.

‘He thinks nothing of 5am starts six days a week to solve an engineering challenge’

Eric Wilkinson, chairman of the judges for BEEA, said: “With a proven track record in the automotive market Mr Addy is stepping out to be innovative in a small company, where he is taking risks, but using his experience. He thinks nothing of 5am starts six days a week to solve an engineering challenge. Cubewano MD Craig Fletcher, who nominated Mr

Addy, said: “He worked crazy hours in a small garage with minimal machining capabilities to create a novel engine which, to this day, has not been bettered by any other firm or designer. But he is not resting on his laurels yet, and has already created a working prototype of a new line of lightweight portable power generators using our engine technology.”

Charity commitment recognised

Specialist wealth manager Quilter has won the Investment Management Award at the Charity Times Awards ceremony, beating off competition from rival investment houses Barings, Rathbones and Schroders. The judges cited the Quilter’s

clear commitment to the charity sector, a focus on risk management and engagement with charities through the company’s volunteering programme and its own charity, The Quilter Foundation, as the compelling factors that singled out the firm for the award. Quilter currently manages in excess of £500m of charitable funds.

Three STEP staff at George Green

Emma Wing, a private client solicitor at Black Country law firm George Green LLP, has become the firm’s third fully qualified member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP). Associate and joint head of

Stephen Vakil, Quilter’s managing director, said: “I am delighted that the judges have recognised the truly bespoke

service and disciplined investment process that we deliver. Winning this award is a clear demonstration of our commitment to the sector.”

George Green’s private team, Ms Wing took two years to qualify. She joins colleagues Adrian Church and Deborah Beal who are already full STEP members. STEP is the professional body for

practitioners in the fields of trusts, estates and related issues.
