Hospice chosen as Chamber charity

S

t Mary’s Hospice in Selly Park has been named as the Chamber’s official charity for 2011/12.

The charity was chosen by new Chamber

president Mike Ward, who took up his term of office in October. St Mary’s is in Raddlebarn Road, Selly

Park, and is the only independent hospice in Birmingham.

It has been helping people suffering from

terminal illness for more than 30 years, and also supports carers and family members. The hospice costs £6.6m to run each

year, and some £2.5m of this is contributed by fundraising efforts. The hospice joins a number of other

organisations which have benefited from being the Chamber president’s chosen charity. The others are Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer, the Variety Club of Great Britain and St Basil’s. In total, around £46,000 has been raised

for those four charities. Fundraising efforts include a prize draw at the Chamber Group Annual Dinner and Awards, which next takes place on 26 April 2012. Mike Ward said he was pleased to be supporting St Mary’s during his year in office, and added: “The hospice provides valuable care and support for people suffering a wide range of terminal conditions, including cancer, AIDS and multiple sclerosis. “As the only independent hospice in the

region, its contribution to the community is enormous, and I am proud to be offering it my support during the coming 12 months.”

New event partner joins scheme

Edgbaston-based travel company Pure Destinations has joined Birmingham Chamber’s events partner scheme. Pure Destinations, which has a shop at Templefield Square, Edgbaston, has been in business for 21

years, and offers a full range of holidays to destinations all over the world. The company is also a specialist agent for Solihull based Kuoni Travel, the adventure holiday firm. As an event partner, Pure Destinations will be able to take advantage of a multitude of profile

raising activities at Chamber events. Pure director Lakh Hayer said: “I felt that the event partner agreement would give the company better brand awareness and that it was value for money.”
