Smell of success in food recycling
PROBLEMS with flies and bad odours caused by the Allington incinerator have been eased since the borough council brought in a newfoodwaste policy earlier this year.
Four out of every five homes in
the Maid- stone area now recycle their food waste by put- ting it in sep- arate kitchen caddies, for collection by the council. Each week,
more than 100 tonnes of food is sent for compost- ing to the Blaise Farm facility at West Malling. Prior to the scheme being intro-
Complaints log IN the last quarter of last year, the plant’s community liaison committee heard that 10 com- plaints had been received from residents. “Of these,” according to the minutes, “seven related to odour (four justified and three unjustified), two related to flies (neither of which was found to be justified); and one unjustified complaint related to black smoke from the stack.”
duced in January, householders put their surplus food inthe same bin as general household waste, which was transported to the in- cinerator at Allington. Residents on the estate used to complain regularly about the smell and the swarms of flies at- tracted to the plant. But there have been far fewer incidents now that the separately collected food waste goes to
Blaise Farm. Local councillor Malcolm Robertson said: “We don’t have the odour or fly problems any more. “We had some jollyhot weather recently but we didn’t have the fly problem as before.” The bor-
ough’s recy- cling rate has shot up to 45% this year, putting the council well on track to achieving its target of 50%. Cllr Marion
Ring, cabinet member for
the environment, said local farm- ers use the compost to grow more food. “It’s a great system, simple and very sustainable,” she added.

Litter louts have had their chips THE Snodland Goes Cleaner group went out on a litter pick to link up with the launch of the national ‘Love Where You Live’ campaign. Town council chairman Anne Moloney and Cllr Dilys Crook joined in the clean-up around Rocfort Road, High Street, Salt- ings Road and the cricket ground. They filled six
large sacks and found aWinnie the Pooh mug and a pint glass as well as cans, bot- tles and plenty of polystyrene chip boxes. Mini bins were handed out to people in the High Street and a supply was left with businesses to distribute to customers.

Masked gang of five in early-morning raid A GANG of fivemasked raiders struck at a property at Ryarsh, and stole a large haul of electrical goods, cash and jewellery. Police appealed for witnesses following the burglary on the A20 London Road at the junction of Sandy Lane. The incident occurred between 12.30am and 1.30am on October
17. The suspects are believed to be five black men who had their faces covered. They are said to be in their early 20s and had South London accents.
Extension would
cause ‘visual harm’ A PROPOSAL to erect a two- storey side and rear extension at Gunwalloe, Tonbridge Road, Teston, was refused. Maidstone Council felt the
size and rear projection of the application, which involved the demolition of an existing garage and rear extension, “would overwhelm and destroy the form of the original house re- sulting in a poor form of devel- opment that would cause visual harm to the character, appear- ance of the streetscene and countryside”.
