THE CEREMONY

If you feel nervous before the ceremony, or have any queries, please speak to the registrar who will be happy to help you. The registrar will begin the ceremony with a welcome and short introduction where he/she will speak of the solemn and binding character of the vows you are about to make. In a wedding ceremony you will then be asked to repeat your statutory declarations.

If you wish, you can personalise the ceremony by including your own vows which in the case of a marriage ceremony can be said in addition to the statutory declarations. These must be non religious for a civil ceremony.

When you have made your declarations you may wish to exchange rings. You will then be declared married. The bride and groom or civil partners and witnesses, who must all be over 16 years of age, will then sign the marriage/civil partnership schedule.

The registrar will leave you for a few moments, for you to speak with your guests and/or have photographs taken.

LEGAL REQUIREMENTS

You don’t have to live in Scotland to get married or enter a civil partnership in East Renfrewshire. If you live outside the UK, you will have to provide additional documentation, details of which can be obtained from the Registrar.

You and your partner will need to complete separate marriage or civil partnership notices. These have to be submitted to the office for the district in which your ceremony will take place. This can be done not more than three months or less than 15 days before the date of the ceremony. These forms can be collected from any registrar’s office in Scotland, or be posted out from the office where you want your ceremony to take place. Alternatively, they can be downloaded from the Registrar General for Scotland’s website at www.gro-scotland.gov.uk

Bookings can be made in East Renfrewshire up to two years in advance by paying the appropriate booking fee. When submitting notice all relevant documentation and fees are required.

All certificates must be originals, photocopies are not acceptable. Anyone subject to Immigration Control will need to submit the required documentation. Please contact Registrar for advice on documentation and fees required.
