FOREWORD
Foreword: Mike Farley Chief Executive, Persimmon Plc
I
n 2011 the UK housing market has remained stable despite the global economic turmoil. We expect the
situation to remain challenging in 2012. Encouragingly the credit crisis, which adversely affected the housing sector, due to the shortage of mortgage finance, is receding. We are seeing more mortgage products on the market and we, at Persimmon, continue to explore opportunities to improve the availability of mortgage finance with our key mortgage lending partners. We are particularly keen to
assist a greater number of first time buyers in fulfilling their desire to acquire a home of their own. We have been successful in securing funding from the HCA under the FirstBuy shared equity scheme, which specifically focuses on assisting first time buyers to acquire a new build home. This funding will help us deliver 2,100 new homes across 290 developments nationwide. In 2012 we expect the overall
growth in new home sales volumes to reflect the developments in the wider economy. We anticipate completing a similar number of new homes during 2011 as we did in 2010. The UK housebuilding sector
has achieved great progress in the standards of design, construction and service to its clients in recent years. As an industry, we take our environmental responsibilities very
seriously and are passionate about designing homes that are sensitive to the environment in which they are built. The homes we build have a significant lifetime. Through their occupation, each home we build will have a major impact on the environment surrounding it. We have a responsibility to create homes that are efficient and enable our customers to minimise their social and environmental impacts.

Operational and energy
efficiencies are at the forefront of our customers’ minds when they buy a new home. We work to minimise the impact of our developments on the environment and endeavour to build energy efficient homes that meet the highest grade of the Code for Sustainable Homes introduced by the Government. In particular, Persimmon is the

builds energy efficient timber frame houses using a patented manufacturing process to produce a unique, high performance, wall and floor system in its Birmingham based manufacturing site, Space4. Last year Persimmon built 2,700 homes thanks to its unique modular construction method, which enables energy savings of up to 50 per cent compared to traditional methods of construction. Despite the global downturn, our
Charles Church business, which provides a range of premium homes in both modern and traditional styles, continues to grow. The market for premium and, at the very top end of the market ‘luxury homes’ is being resilient. The UK housebuilding sector is
driven by a motivated and efficient workforce, working hard to achieve the highest standards. Building quality and efficiency are continuously improving. The industry, in its vast majority, promotes health and safety awareness and standards in construction and training for all industry players. We endeavour to offer a healthy and safe working environment to staff and contractors and we monitor and review the implementation of our policies and procedures regularly. I look forward to continuing to
raise the UK housebuilding standards in 2012 and beyond.
