climate change, where are we now? By Dr Jacquelyn Fox Head of Sustainability, CIBSE


CIBSE is the learned and professional body for building services engineers, with a global membership of almost 20,000. The Institution exists to ‘support the Science, Art and Practice of building services engineering, by providing our members and the public with first class information and education services and promoting the spirit of fellowship which guides our work.' Jacquelyn serves as the Head of Sustainability at the institute. Whilst previously working for Barratt Developments Plc, Jacquelyn gained a PhD in the field of the Built Environment and has also had a career as a mechanical engineer and has extensive experience of the physics of buildings. CIBSE also have a new specialist interest Group ‘The Homes for the Future Group’, which aims to inform and promote best practice in building services when constructing or renovating better homes. Here, Jacquelyn lends her expertise to the subject of the effects of climate change and government plans for carbon zero homes.

he existing housing stock in the United Kingdom is reported to be amongst the least energy . In 2004,


housing (including space heating, hot water, lighting, cooking, and appliances) accounted for 30.23 per cent of all energy use in the UK; up from 27.70 per cent in 1990. In December 2006, the


previous government announced their ambition that all new housing should be built to ‘zero carbon’ standards from 2016, such that over a typical year the carbon emissions from the home would be balanced by on site renewable energy generation. Despite being the first country in the world to adopt such a policy, it was generally welcomed by the industry, in principle, despite some subsequent concern over the practicalities.
