Policy Series Symposium: Older Americans Act Reauthorization: 4 Ideas for Innovation
Chair: Bob Blancato Since 1965, The Older Americans Act has protected the well-being of older Americans through targeted services, training, and research. The reauthorization of the OAA in 2011 coincides with the first of the baby boomers turning 65. Reauthorization is an important opportunity to adapt the Act to the changing needs of an increasingly healthy, diverse, and aging America. This symposium will put forth four innovative ideas for discussion. Moderator Bob Blancato, a long-time aging policy expert in Washington, DC, will provide a brief overview to set the context. Council on the Aging will present ideas for revamping Title IV to increase the Act’s research capacity. Janet Frank, President- elect of AGHE, will propose changes around ensuring a competent workforce. Tony Sarmiento, Senior Service America, Inc., will present ideas around the future of the low- income older worker employment programs funded under Title V. Brian Lindberg, GSA’s policy consultant, will discuss recommendations developed by the Age4Action Network for modernizing the OAA in the areas of work, service learning and leadership. This interactive session will allow ample time for audience participation.
